| THE STAR SPANGLES I LIVE FOR SPEED (single/ CAPITOL) If NYCs hipsters The Strokes want to fanny about with their still-in-production follow-up to their huge Is This It? debut album that took good old fashioned garage rock n roll for the most sublime of rides, well they can. No - we dont honestly need them anymore so long as The Star Spangles are around and remain as rocking as they are right now, specially with these present and correct 2-minute-something sing-alongs. While their debut single Which One of the 2 of Us is Gonna Burn This House Down? took-the-mick as a mouthful, I Live For Speed sounds succinct enough, and sure is an anthem built for any willing stadium. TSS solder old skool punk excitement with mesmerising rock guitar solos and such rollicking vigour its difficult not to dismiss bands like The Strokes out of your mind for good after just one sole listen to Speed Their tunes and upbeat front are of prime importance, yet theres still room for the odd quality lyric or two, too. Im gonna make somebodys day tonight frontman Ian Wilson croaks during b-side I Feel So Good, while Climbing The Corporate Ladder (that reminds of one of my all-time fave old-skool punk bands in The Vibrators) fully justifies this utterly awesome bands willingness to zestfully burn out and never fade away under any false pretenses. Make the most of The Star Spangles while theyre in their prime, as evidenced on their debut album Bazooka!!! Rock n roll dont get much better. Even if only 2 of the 4 band members in singer Wilson, guitarist Tommy Volume, bassist Nick Price and drummer Joey Valentine wield rock n roll names. Mmm care to guess which 2?! 5/5 (STEVE RUDD) www.thestarspangles.com |
