| THE SECOND COMING was just about the best thing I have ever seen on TV in all my 22, small-town and down-to-earth years. Led by the astonishingly intense actor Christopher Eccleston, it brings Biblical importance right up to speed when the character he plays comes to believe he is the Son of God! Eccleston is one of the best Brit actors in circulation and first impressed me in 2001s off-kilter drama Strumpet, and more recently in the fab Brit movie 28 Days Later where his ability to act more menacing than Jack Nicholson in The Shining came to the horrifying fore. But Russell T Davies is the genius behind the story, spurring torrents of controversy with his cutting-edge and upfront work. His drama series Queer As Folk made just as many headlines when first shown, and while 2001s luvved-up comedy drama of the year in his sweetly-penned Bob & Rose wasnt as controversial, its female lead in da lovely Lesley Sharp hooked him up with an absolutely cracking actress who also provides the love interest for the Son of God no less this time round. 'The Second Coming' is surreal, it's funny it's the most life-affirming slice of fear known to and now experienced by man. For making sheer human drama this entertaining, Russell T Davies - we salute you. (STEVE RUDD) |
