THE RIVERBANK MORNING CIRCUS (5-track demo)
Oh should it be The Riverbank Mourning Circus?
This demo is extraordinarily exciting in the sense that these 4 protagonists who are producing the music are defying all logic, and while one reference point has to be made to Scottish lo-fi Emo experts Mogwai, this band is in essence a Prog-Prog-Rock band of their own compelling making
Running Amok, the intriguing introductory soundscape subtly sounds as sweetly poignant as their melodic laments mean to go on through Moonlandings atmospherics and the acoustic-accompanied Tynn Y Ddoll
These bedtime stories will inevitably be some of the most way-out and lulling youll have heard. Their Voyage To Neptune, for example, is a subtly exhilarating masterpiece as a lovely, finger-picked guitar melody ambles along unassumingly for 2 minutes before the tune goes off at a complete tangent, yet manages to remain as tuneful as the stretch of music that preceded.
With Paolo on Keyboards and vocals, Lee in charge of the fundamentally essential bass pockets, Adam on guitar and Ben on drums, TRMC are nothing if not surprising and unpredictable in their genius approach.
Shame then about the vocals that have been grated through a voice changer. While the initial novelty value of Paolo sounding like a wacked-out alien high and dry on Prittstick is fun, the resultant encrypted and impossible-to-decipher vocals let the side down big-time.
Should the guy start singing properly, though, and without voice manipulating equipment, then theyll unlock the power to go seriously interesting places with their truly awesome melodies and stance on producing genuinely original music in which the importance of emotion expressed in soundbites is paramount.   4/5    (STEVE RUDD)
