| THE GA GAS BREAKING AMERICA (single/ CRISIS RECORDS) Radio Ga-Ga! These 4 young dudes - from places as ridiculously far-flung as Somerset, Brazil, Japan and Birmingham - are ramming out the finest power-pop-rock since the 80s spawned Bon Jovi. Though these guys are living in the now and not one of them has a mullet. All of them, mind, have hell of an ear for a tune and each of these three bleeding vibrant tracks has the potential to make this band huge. You mayswell forget The Star Spangles already, because The Ga Gas pole-axe real rock riffs and still manage to sound majorly mainstream due in no small part to this singles utterly fab production values. Breaking America, aptly kitted-out with a CD sleeve depicting a knackered guitar, goes to the anthem-factory and back to remind of The Foo Fighters, and lesser so stadium-rock bands of Nicklebacks caliber. Deep down under the sheened gloss of it all they might just harbour political affairs of the heart with lyrics along the ominous lines of They cover up the statues we dont have a chance if we leave it up to you, so hail the turn-on chug of Sex which is much more thematically clean-cut albeit much less anthemic, and not that raw either. Mmm, Im sure for a moment there The Gas sounded like a croaking cross between the Stereophonics and Def Leppard, before the singles closer reigns as its highlight. Oh yeh, the glamour hooked Real World (Everything you love you secretly despise) is power-pop buffed to such an awesomely catchy shine that theres only thing you can really hope upon hope. And thats that The Ga Gas had better keep their heads and feet anchored in the real world and thus go forth in continuing to produce accessible-for-all rock music of this much-craved-for high standard. 5/5 (STEVE RUDD) Release date: August 11th 2003 www.thegagas.com E-mail [email protected] |
