| THE DELAYS HEY GIRL (3-track single/ ROUGH TRADE) Theres literally no time to waste in admitting this Alt-rock 4-piece, The Delays, are a Southampton-stationed force to be reckoned with. Their magically melodic and heartwarmingly harmonious music is the stuff of Little Bo Peeps sweetest dreams, and their good vibes are gorgeously affecting as Hey Girl exhibits summer loving at its best, the sexily chilled-on-ice tune and high-flying vocals pulling exquisitely together to revel as the most uplifting song ever to spill forth from the South of England. The second track - Zero Zero One - is a boldly subtle instrumental steeped in nothing but positive energy, proving The Delays dont intend to be patient in charming the pants off us with sublime soundscapes such as this: bright and heavenly in all their under-stated and admirably modest glory. Yep, these boys are sure making the most of the Alt.-pop niche theyve edged into. Caressing timeless Beach Boy-stylised finesse in their songwriting ways, you kind of expect them to have already toured with similarly quirky entities such as the Mull Historical Society, The Thrills and Clearlake. And sure enough they already have. Armed with an attitude this charming, they are in truth way ahead of their time. 5/5 (STEVE RUDD) |
