| THE CONSPIRACY PROZAK (5-track demo) 3 men and one mission. I just aint too sure what their mission be!! Coming on like a genius cross between Primal Scream and the Pet Shop boys, Duncan Pope, Clive Bray and Dave Bell jam out genre-mushing, mainstream-inclined experimentalism with more style than Liz Hurley donning Versace. This band have allegedly been around since time began, or at least since the dawn of the 90s in the century just past, and while EP-opener Motives is pretty plain-old indie-pop with a spike-punked chorus, the Black Hole that follows swallows what came before with its cool riff thats attained classic tune status by my standards, and is a track that The Prodigy would wet themselves over. Safe (I only feel safe when no-ones round) fosters a further punky fold, harbouring a familiarly fantastic Stranglers-esque quality. But The Conspiracy just impress even more when least expected, as highlight Letter To Matt proffers a seductive and poetic narrative that gracefully tip-toes into a startlingly melodic and harmonic tune, frontman Duncan lamenting with the forlorn Lloyd Cole in mind. (The only other band Ive heard of thats convincingly producing this tract of innovative material is Hulls Kid Samson, to name-drop another fine band thats worth checking out.) But steady! That highlight is then superceded as they bow out with Red Bird, the blissful opening chords progressing into a plushly catchy and funky as feck beauty leaving with nothing more to bemoan other than, I WANT MORE! I WANT MORE! I WANT MORE! Cream of the Crop 'zine gushed in one of their reviews I love this band but not as much as I do, Godammit.
