AN INTERVIEW WITH SID STOVOLD!...
1. HI SID, A TRUE STALWART OF THE UNDERGROUND MUSIC SCENE... HOW ARE THINGS?
Not too bad actually, I've been feeling better recently than I have done for the past year and a half I think !
2. GIVEN THAT YOU ARE IN A BAND, YOU WRITE A FANZINE AND RUN 'DEPARTURE RECORDS' AMONGST OTHER THINGS, WHICH ONE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TO YOU AND WHICH DO YOU TRY DEVOTE MOST TIME TO?
Time is the main problem actually but having concentrated on the label for a bit I'm now devoting the majority of my time to my new band "Wherewithal"
3. YOU USED TO PLAY GUITAR IN THE HUGELY-POPULAR BAND 'INTER'... SINCE THAT BAND HEART-BREAKINGLY (FOR ME AT LEAST!) PARTED WAYS, WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN UPTO?
Well, for a while I played guitar in a band called 'The Treatment' but that was only for fun and only temporary too as we knew the singer was moving to the Czech Republic, since then I concentrated on the label and distro for a while and now it's time for my new band...
4. PLEASE TELL US MORE ABOUT 'DEPARTURE RECORDS'?
Well, I always wanted my own record label and so last year I put it all into action. I also always wanted to give people the chance to get stuff released who wouldn't do so otherwise hence the reason I do the compilations of new and obliquely obscure stuff...
5. DON'T WORRY, I'M GETTING TO IT... WHAT ON EARTH IS 'WORDS WILL NEVER BE ACTIONS'? (PRESUMING THE NICE PEOPLE VISITING THIS SITE HAVEN'T SEEN THE GAPING LINK ON MY HOMEPAGE TO MORE INFO!)
It's the first in a series of vinyl-only compilation albums (limited to 500 copies) of people who have something to say about the world we live in today. New and obscure punk based stuff mostly. Selling well it is too
6. 'POPART' IS THE FANZINE YOU WRITE. WHY DID YOU START WRITING IT, AND HOW IS IT GOING?
Just this second completed issue 7 actually (one pound and sae from me). It took a while for other reasons than the 'zine itself but it's easily our best one yet. Why did I start it ? To get free records of course !!
7. IS THERE MUCH OF A LIVE MUSIC SCENE WHERE YOU LIVE IN FARNBOROUGH?
There always has been, except I'm drifiting out of it at the moment because it's all nu-metal or ska-punk and I'm bored of all that. When my new band starts gigging we're going to blow perople away by being a bit different....
8. WHEN CAN WE EXPECT YOUR NEW BAND TO BE TOURING?
Soon, very soon I hope. We're currently now up to a solid 3-piece (2 guitars amnd vocals) but we have bassists and drummers interested..It's just a question of auditioning them....NEXT WEEK IS WHEN WE'RE STARTING THAT...
9. AND I HEAR THAT IN YOUR SPARE-TIME YOU ARE BIT OF A POET... IS THERE TRUTH IN THAT TOO?!
Yep, sure is. I like poetry a lot. As the main songwriter in my new band it's the first time that my poetry is getting the proper outing (albeit in song form) that it so richly deserves.....
