ROSWELL VOID
(8-track mini-album/ CACOPHONOUS)
Here and now, listen up.
You dont have to go all the way to Scandinavia to hear 6-piece shard-core nutters Roswell. Nope, what you need to do is visit www.cacophonous.com and order a copy of this 8-track mini-album instead - and live out the rest of your mortal days in awe.
The Cacophonous label to which Roswell are indebted - is one of the coolest starting points should you be vainly searching for quality music at its most extreme: this label prides itself on the individual, unconventional and diverse musical aesthetics it stands for with a fist. Recent signings to their books include Scalplock and Unsanctum, while Cacophonous (founded in 1993) has previously dealt with the mighty Cradle of Filth.
And you cant deny that Roswell sound like the latter UK band, or poppy German-metal geniuses Rammstein.
Void opens with the frantic Mist and neither intensity nor pace slips one bit from there on in, Claudio Marinos vocals leading the music to the most unsettling of places and back towards Awakening and its infallible wall of guitar theatrics. Carnal Vessel has operatic diva Eva Heinaste also on tangential vocals to Claudios, and this track is one of four that feature various guest vocalists that add intriguing dimension.
This mini-album is the follow-up to 2002s 6-track beast The Nothing. Rampaging out of Sweden back-breaking and hell-bent on global domination, what with 2 full-time guitarists and a separate drummer and percussionist, Roswells sound is so vibrant it hurts and though their swipe at the hardcore metal genre isnt as original as it could or should be, they are nonetheless so unflinching that in a live situation even Slipknot would be scared.    4/5    (Steve Rudd)
