A DAMN FINE CHAT WITH
PSP frontman RYAN!...

1.
Hi Ryan, what have you and PSP been up to?
R We have been practicing lots with our new drummer Jason and writing some new songs and reworking little sections of current songs to give them a bit of a different feeling, nothing too drastic, just changing little parts to keep us all on our toes!! We have done a few gigs that have gone really well.

2.
On the back of 2 fantastic EPs, 'NOW IS THE TIME' and 'TOO FINE LINE,' how they fcuk are you going to top the quality of music you have so far rammed out?
R I think that if we just carry on as we have from the beginning! By concentrating on the songs and pushing ourselves musically and not worrying about trends and having to fit into any scene/style, just as we have always done, I think we will be ok!

3.
Do you see PSP as being part of the nu-metal scene. You straddle so many kick-ass genres of the rock music spectrum you are a hard band to slap a 'label' on don't you think?
R No, we are not a nu-metal band. As you say, we dont really fit in with any specific genre. Our roots are definitely in metal, but the metal we mean is metal such as Slayer, Metallica, Pantera, (we are talking THRASH, not NU!) the stuff we listened to growing up. We are not a straightforward metal band, we just play what we like and if it sounds like insert genre tag here then so be it.

4.
Your 'CAN WE CHANGE THAT' track is an epic masterpiece? How long on average does it take for a dynamic song like that to be written, and what are tips for writing music like you guys do?
R That song just happened really, like most of them. It was an idea I had to put these riffs I had together, which I recorded on my 4-track, then when we all started working on it in practice the song just evolved into what it is. It didnt take ages to write the song really, we just work on them every time we practice, changing things around, working with song dynamics etc etc.

5.
Were you pleased with the response that 'TOO FINE LINE' provoked?
R Yes, of course. It was amazing to be getting such good reviews. It made me feel that people were actually taking some notice of what we have put a lot of time effort and money into. I like to think that the people who actually reviewed the CD listened to the CD without any prejudice against certain music, genres etc, which seems to pull down some reviews of music, and most of our reviews were cool in that respect.

6.
What is the live music scene like at the moment in and around South Yorkshire? Are you out on a limb with the type of intense rock/grunge/lo-fi/metal style of music you are playing?
R Its not massive, it seems to be picking up a bit in Barnsley, so now its nearly ok rather than dire! I think we are still seen as some kind of novelty band in Barnsley, people dont really get what we do, so we get mixed reactions and dont get much response or respect for what we do. I guess its fair enough if they dont like screaming metal and the like, but it isnt something you get from just picking up a guitar and shouting into a microphone to achieve, it actually takes some time and hard work. It is always good to when we get a surprised reaction on peoples faces when they see us set off playing, especially in Barnsley, not many people actually know what to expect. On the other hand we are starting to see regular faces at gigs and having fans talking to us and getting in touch with us. I hope that heavier/extreme music will pick up in popularity and we can get out further a field and play to an appreciative crowd.

7.
Finally, what is PSP's post-Christmas message to the music fraternity?
R - Happy Easter! Just kidding! Keep an eye out for a new P>S>P release, we dont have any set dates, but we are going to record some new music in the near future and hopefully it will be out soon (check the website purplestickypunch.co.uk). Thanks to the people who are supporting us, and music in general (this means you too Steve!) Hope to see more people at more gigs this year. Take care all.
Thanks, Ryan (P>S>P)
