| PRINCESS HEADBUTT GREEN AND SOMETIMES BLUE EP (NOISESTAR RECORDS) This is about as original as music gets. This nutty 6-piece manifestation of Electronica as a spirited artform, Princess Headbutt are from the West Midlands, theyve previously played acclaimed gigs with the likes of Kid Galahad and Herman Dune, and this EP is in astonishing fact - their debut release. Still, the musicianship is so flawless that they sound like true pros whove been at this songwriting and recording lark for decades, as their opening Calculator is an ultra-groovy wedge of jazz-funk-pop of all cross-genre styles, beaming brightly through its wealth of cute sounds and crazy arrangement. Recorded with an 8-track tape machine and computers, this super-smooth, captivatingly cool EP progresses with Pickle, an Emo-ish guitar soundscape pulsing magically off some mellow trumpet playing for the desired effect, before the must-hear masterstroke of the final track in Trans-Metropolitan. The hypnotic subtlety and less is more approach proves that even the most lo-fi of lo-fi music can be dynamic and harness the ability to rouse real emotion in the listener. Psychedelically sultry and with a keen obsession in favour of sounding like no other band ever known to man before them, there are a few moments when you might be reminded of Blur at their most eclectic and refreshingly experimental. Otherwise, Princess Headbutt are a revelation in being so different in their ways. 4/5 (STEVE RUDD) www.princessheadbutt.co.uk www.fuzzpop.co.uk |
