PLASTIC HEROES - 'THE BOY'
(DUST RECORDS)

If contemporary pop-culture heroes have to be plastic then so be it. So long as they're good and are producing top quality music, as these 4 lads are. This 7" debut single is blessed with 'The Boy' on the upside and cool, happy Glammy-rock vigour that's perfectly vibrant and magically melodic.
Guitarist/ vocalist Marc Olivier has a sublime voice that sounds as though Steve Harley is fronting Placebo, while his Plastic Heroes' surging nu-wave pop does remind of Londoners Remoter Control (who split up in 2002, though some of the original band members are now shrouded beneath top new band
Ariel-X). Strokes producer Gordon Raphael was so over-awed by this band's sound that he came forward and has worked with them on their second single (due for release in February 2004), 'Mary B.'
The b-side on this debut single, before we get too carried away though, is 'Everyday Is For You' a gloriously upbeat, feel-good shot of uber-energy and is the purest epitome of the type of popular music that should be rife in the charts.
As for their debut album - hey, we only have to wait till Summer '04 for that. But, trust me - it's going to be well worth the wait because these two taster tracks served up by this quartet are truly awesome.    5/5    (Steve Rudd)
