PLANET 10 -
'SCATTERED ASHES' (EP)

While the Goth-Metal scene is undeniably active in excess in hearts, minds and coffins across the globe, there still seems to be very few quality bands actually producing the music in the UK. As for East Yorkshire's effective contribution to the scene, there is obviously Torso Horse and then Hull's Planet 10, who just like the 'Horse, sound ready to take on the world.
Unlike Torso Horse, Planet 10's heavy grind owes itself more to a Medieval-Metal scene with their menacing poetry pitting good against evil for once and for all.
Each of the four members do toy with the full-on, make-up obsessed Goth image, but their music sounds far too heavy for the same scene when Goth-metal is largely melodic and riff-based hard rock.
EP opener 'Necrophilia' ('You're forever my inspiration, but you breathe no more'') reminds less of Torso Horse and more of blunt-edged and hardcore bands like Skeletal Confusion, whose epic intricacies and angrily battering intensity can make such music difficult listening.
'Ceremonial Crematorium' ('You're a queen within your right') is yet heavier, singer/ guitarist '20' (who both looks like and sounds like Metallica's James Hetfield) spitting nails and guitarist Jonny Hirons boldly forcing his guitar to wail with brilliantly bulky musical interludes though 'Manslaughter' is the most melodic song on this EP in bloody spurts, before 'Remnants' is literally all that remains of our time on the faraway rock reaches of Planet 10.
In their minds the end of the world is nigh. And with this much insane enthusiasm sweatily poring forth it's petrifyingly hard not to believe them    7/10    (STEVE RUDD)
