| OUR LADY PEACE SUPERMANS DEAD (3-track single/ 1997) Before or after this 1997 single I aint heard much of OLP and arent sure how their Altish-rock is faring-up, but the signs here are good, even if they shouldve reconsidered reshuffling the track ordering: Track 3, Starseed, is easily the highlight and strongpoint. Pessimistic title-track Supermans Dead (Ordinarys just not good enough today) begins with a menacingly subdued acoustic guitar, these Ladys relying on impassioned A-woo-hoo!? and Why ee aii ee aii ee?! pledges, for impact come the chorus, rather than jaw-droppingly original lyrics. Hosts of bands could be compared to them, feeding on the same dark-yet-undaunting rock vibe Cyclefly so infectiously ply. So, once your faith is gone, and the pants-esque ones deceased, who you gonna call? Let You Down is glammer and punkier, but a forgettably abstract disappointment (Theres a cigarette thief stealing cigarette disease), their introverted vibrancy repressing potentially potent dynamics. Its worth the wait for the cuter catchability of Starseed, starting-out with a blooming acoustic-weighted rawness lunging into the strongest beat and riff present. A straightforward rocker, plain and tall, the vox out-stand in a pearly Ed Vedder kind of way. Bringing awaiting public to Their Commercial Knees.
