| ORCA - 'HOPES EVER SHIFTING' (single/ ALASKA RECORDS) In the space of just six minutes running time, this Plymouth band miraculously manage to almost single-handedly re-define the term 'Emo-rock,' pushing such a style of music to the brink of euphoric insanity and beyond. Orca's heavy music is so epic in nature, and so jammed with original ideas and flamboyant arrangements, that they have to be regarded as being 'Prog-Emo-rock', with their title track in 'Hopes Ever Shifting' in turns devastatingly intense and cruelly tender. 'Can you see where the light is drawn?' the singer openly wonders, as the vibrant music exhilarates in very much the same vein as Biffy Clyro's does so efficiently. B-side 'Constants Collapsing' is equally as punishing in its scope, but far more upbeat than the moody title track, yet still rife with Orca's clear taste for Sludge/ Grindcore music. The future of Emo-rock, clearly, is surfacing (Steve Rudd) www.orcaband.co.uk |
