MO*HO*BISH*O*PI HEAR THE AIR
(3-track single/ 2000/ V2 RECORDS)

And, the rise and rise of mo-ho-bish-o-pi continues, having perfected their practicing through supporting The Beta Band, Ten Benson, Terris, The Donnas, My Vitriol, Angelica and more-recently King Adora on their slow-but-cocksure ascent. And, just as the nation braces itself for their new, classically timeless Names (For Nameless Things) to chart-storm, Im sat here reviewing their first single since they signed to V2 Records from June 00. But just listen to their visionary innovation, the frantic Alt.-punk rock of Hear The Air savaging any rigid rules and regulations on how best to write a pop song in the new century. Rachel from Tomsk rants her blood vessels to bursting point, the urgent peck contrasting with Dont R.I.P. My Face, with usual lead singer Martin Bimrose returning vocals to a cooler fold, shuddering pace changes peering into Lo-fi, pop, punk and rock niches behind the melodys solidarity. Bimroses vox remind of the maniacal lunacy that The Crocketts mainman in Davey brings-to-life; feisty, fun-packed, and with no innocence lost, the mo*ho minds tend to operate in the same startling way that Seafoods grey matter creates an exhilarating buzz. Totally Uninspired so obviously aint, now with Arnold (who drummed on Dont R.I.P.) now singing and playing guitar as duties are passed round (once said Bimrose, in interview: Weve been told that a band needs a frontman but its alright, because weve got three), his unconventional vocal delivery angstily distanced and perfectly suited to impendingly Lower-fied bleakness. As weve since come to expect, OB*I*ONE*KEN*O*BI hack out weird, reckless pop songs to snub in the face of poncily-pure pop haters. Theyre severely alternative yet slyly anthemic, and something suggests the bests still yet to come. So go buy Names For Nameless Things and then try put your finger on where, imprecisely, theyre coming from.      (Steve Rudd)
