| MOGUL - 'PLAY AWAY' (3-track single/ WRETCHED RECORDINGS) Spiky and masterfully melodic, these guys are pop-rock medium moguls who know how to write remarkably anthemic tunes, anchored by some vital bass-lines and vibrant vocals. The title track leads proceedings, followed by the more lovelorn 'Set Her Free' which is wistfully fantastical, its sweet medieval-styled acoustics and subtly soulful vibes somehow reminiscent of Sting; indeed, this track would have fitted onto his 'Brand New Day' album without anyone batting an eyelid. The final track - 'Sleepless' - is the most upbeat, the clean-cut guitars creating a truly grand indie-rock sound not to be messed with. My advice is simple. Don't 'play away' whatever you do. Stay home instead, and listen to this. (Steve Rudd) www.wretchedrecordings.co.uk |
