MC GRAW'S LAW -
'EVERYTHING TO EVERYONE
'
(3-track demo/ 2002)

Ah the swaggering sound of a beat surrender! Mc Graw's Law - a London based outfit of 4 lads - are revelling in one of their own, and you don't even have a single milli-second to think before 'All Of The Things' pounds its way forth. What would otherwise be standard indie guitar rock owes band member Sam's pacy, clubby drumbeat programming a pint or two for souping their sound into the compulsory listen that this demo is because of it. This indie rock should sound dazed and confused being battered as it is by the hardcore acid house drumbeats, but it works, this colossal belter of an anthem still managing to totally rock out while entranced with Chris' raucously scatterbrain guitar solo that forces the listen to just go with the flow and on into the less confrontational and more emotive 'Heaven High' anthem that starts out with similar high-octane programming, before Sam lashes a further man-made drum beat over the top of that, also courtesy of himself.
This is ambitious rock 'n' roll with a twist, paving the bracing way for a new, highly distinctive type of guitar and beat driven sound. While singer A can remind of the Stereophonics' Kelly Jones, he can sing and he doesn't sound
that much like Rod Stewart, as professed by NME's Holly Hernandez.
The closing track and demo highlight 'This Day Is Over' is perfect ground over which to prove he can sing too, and though this track is less than 2 minutes long, it leaves just as much impact as the first two racy rock tracks, despite 'This Day' being a bare acoustic guitar and voice driven bounty of pure, overwhelming soul.
On the gig front for the band they've played a tightrope of acclaimed gigs and thus already mean something to some folk. And so long as they persevere, one day, they really could mean 'everything to everyone.'      (STEVE RUDD)
