| MARY JANE
WHAT I CAME HERE FOR (EP/ CHOCOLATE FIREGUARD) This is the Huddersfield-based bands delectable debut EP, and - even from simply staring dumbfounded at the CD cover - the innocent soon-to-be-listener-and-in-turn-fan of the band cant help but be intrigued by this trio when theres a sticker declaring that Geordie from the huge band Killing Joke has produced this 4-track release. Whats even more incredible is that, far from having been recorded in West Yorkshire, these four songs were recorded in Prague of all cosmopolitan European capitals! As for the music itself, a melting pot of Pop, Rock and Punk elements coolly coalesce to set the stereo speakers on fire, as the anthemic and highly energetic Lipstick launches the EP as it means to go on, with Love hitting out with the grungy growl of Holes music. All tunes are short, sharp and in-your-face, propelled by strong guitar riffs (here their Truth for the proof), and theres even three bonus tracks that include two live songs plus a crafty remix of Love. Mary Jane is a fem-fronted outfit, as Teri Flynn sets the bands sound alight with her feisty vocals and music-anchoring bass-lines, allowing Rachel Goulding to thrash out on the guitar and sole male Ben Carter to smack his drum-kit half to death. So there. Now you know. Theyre what YOU came here for (review by Steve Rudd) |
