| LFO - 'FREAK' (WARP RECORDS) LFO is a maniacally interesting entity. Essentially creating tunes out of all manner of beats, the LFO faction (about which little is known) is to the music industry what 'STOMP' is to theatrical genius. Opening track 'Freak' is wickedly initialised by a robotised chant and futuristic beat that's perfect for break-dancing and back-breaking to, but then a kind of magic kicks in to the swing of the song until there are a whole host of multi-layered, independently-operating beats that effectively build to a crescendo of hugely original magnificence. Never have synth-sounds that sample Space Invader-tuned gunshots been used so coolly. The other 2 tracks, 'Butterslut' then the quirkily titled 'Whistle While You Jerk,' sound very, very similar to the first track. But they serve their purpose well and prove that just when you thought everything that's previously been done with phat and funky beats has been taken as far as possible, surprise-surprise you discover something of this caliber and know life will never be the same again on account of LFO. While LFO's enthralling experimentalism with structuring their beats means their material may verge on being loosely regarded as 'dance' music by default, their ambitions are non-generic and quite possibly unlike anything you'll have ever heard before. I'm excited, and so should you be 4/5 (STEVE RUDD) |
