| THE LEVELLERS ZEITGEIST (13-track album/ CHINA RECORDS/ 1995) A perfect mixture of punk, rock, folk and pop elements, this album seemed a Godsend for many fans after the bands subdued and self-titled Levellers album. Zeitgeist is a far more vibrant affair, dosed up with a fair enough share of fast punky numbers and slower, tender folk-infused ditties. Forever swiping elements from multiple musical genres and originally mashing em together, these five Brighton based lads always sing passionately and with spirit: promoting the virtues of non-violence, the need for fair human rights and respectable degrees of liberty and free speech. Opened by the anthemically rousing magic of Hope Street, the other most upbeat and rocking tracks are 4 am, Fantasy and Leave This Town. Just The One is probably the most well-known of the album tracks, having been a chart hit on release in 1995, but if thats the only Levs song youve ever heard, you really do need to get a hold of a full album to hear what youve for so long been missing. Seriously. The Levellers, with their humane attitudes intact, could change your life. (Steve Rudd) For more details... on their appearance at 2004's BEVERLEY FOLK FESTIVAL click here |
