| KUBRICK REVERIE (single/ ROCKETSCIENCE RECORDS) This single isnt to be confused with a young British Alt.-rock band who go by the name of Reverie. This song is Richard Gombaults work (whos formerly of Midget), and in enthralling essence stands-out as rampagingly polished, melodic stadium-metal. Gombault doesnt sound to be in any mood for messing around or time wasting. He learnt the rock n roll ropes and rules with Midget (who made considerable impact back in the 90s when signed to Warner), and if Midget provided the necessary learning curve any persistent songwriter needs to experience, then Kubrick - for him - is the exhilarating product of some stealthy songwriting sessions and also of a willingness to be democratic as a 4-piece band to ensure each member pulls sufficient weight, even if How To Lose Friends and Alienate People hears just Rich on acoustic guitar lamenting away. All I know, he sings, is this is going to hurt the super-sensitive Emo vocals recalling Stainds Aarons soulful vocal prowess in that bands more mellower and introspectively sweet moments. The Captains of Industry mix of the title track is inevitably bit of a let-down, though its more aggressively hardcore approach coupled with some twisted string orchestration and an industrial drumbeat (that thumps with the raw power of Tyson first thing Monday morning after a heavy weekend on the tiles) at least ensures this remix is little like the original version. Still, Id rather Kubrick shy away from remixing their work to concentrate instead on new songs or re-working their material into more sublime acoustic-based formats. Otherwise, even Stanley would be proud. 8/10 (STEVE RUDD) Release date: August 18th 2003 www.kubrickonline.com www.rocketsciencerecords.com |
