| KATASTROPHY WIFE - 'MONEY SHOT' ('INTEGRITY RECORDS') What's in a name? Well, Kat Bjelland's name is in her new band's: she being the focal point of the insanely influential US 'riot grrl' grunge-rockers, the Babes in Toyland. Having moved on from her acclaimed years as frontwoman for the Babes, bassist Andy Parker and drummer Darren Donovan here fuel her Katastrophy Wife get-up. This single is the follow-up to the acclaimed 'Liberty Belle' and swiped from the trio's 2nd album together, 'All Kneel.' And you can't help but bow down to the title track of 'Money Shot' with its no-nonsense, fuck-off and fuck-off some more guitar riff, Kat's ever-distinctive shouty vocals and some pleasant backing harmonies. Her hardcore singing style takes some getting used to and reminds of the B-52's frontlady's ability to pin your ears back, as Kat's Wife's Alt. punk rock 'n' roll piledrives into the less tuneful yet much more interesting angst-narrative of 'Busiest Shopping Day' coolly impressing the senses with its menacing guitar hooks, wife-beating theme and enough attitude in Kat to remind of New York singing-songwriting genius Hamell On Trial. The final track 'Alectronancy', for further variety, is a nu-wave Emo-pop instrumental. Which is so effectively unnerving in its ways that no words are needed. And which is so perceptive of the human condition in its ways that everyone SHOULD all rush at once and metaphorically get married to this mob. 4/5 (Steve Rudd) Release date: September 22nd 2003 www.katastrophywife.com www.integrityrecords.com |
