| INME - 'OVERGROWN EDEN' (MUSIC FOR NATIONS) Inme are amazing, and this debut album of theirs cuts not one corner and winds up running for over 3/4's of an hour, equipped with 12 awesome songs no less - every last one an anthem. Opening with their best-known tune, 'Overdose,' this along with tracks 'Crushed Like Fruit' and 'Trenches' hit hard with screaming, Nirvana-esque anguish. The beauty thing about this trio is that their music is not exclusively 'Emo-metal.' There is a defining heaviness throughout, but not all is angst-infused leaving room for some brilliantly melodic rock 'n' roll bouts. Still, the sublime harmonics that open album highlight 'Firefly' and later 'Natural' do remind of Hell is For Heroes. On the former song, as soon as frontman singer/ guitarist Dave McPherson sings 'It's all over now, you've killed me' you really can't deny his prowess as an amazing vocalist - his emotional articulation cuts to the bone and it doesn't stop there Inme may be mad at the world for the large-part, but still find time for the masterpiece Emo-ballad that is 'Her Mask,' that reminds of Staind's forcefully sensitive power and glory, with Joe Morgan's bass and Simon Taylor's drumming proving indispensable components of the Inme sound. In their credits they collectively thank Jack Burton for quirky value (he being the hero of John Carpenter movie 'Big Trouble in Little China,' played by Kurt Russell), and just like Jack Burton may have been a role model for them, Inme have themselves already had a huge impact on the rock scene that's exploded in the face of 2003 and have being an inspiration to others in their own right. Right. Their 'Wounds' is moody, while their bass-led 'Lava Twilight' - with its dark soundscapes - reminds of Torso Horse, with whom they have played before. 'Icewarm' hears Dave's voice at its most impassioned and affecting, confessing that 'Loneliness comforts me, and coupled with the band's dynamic energy and dark overtones they exude an aura reminiscent to the one that Placebo shivers down bones. All in all and all for Inme, 'Overgrown Eden' is relentless Emo-rock perfection and a truly essential album to have sitting proud in your collection. 8/10 Steve Rudd www.inmeonline.com www.music-for-nations.co.uk |
