DEFENESTRATION -
'RAY ZERO'

(DREAMCATCHER)
If, as far as some hermit recluses are concerned, masturbation is the only inspiration, then Defenestration (which is the act of lobbing some dude or other out of a window) might be the proactive Godsend so needed in order to get the apathetic out of bed, kicking out at all that's wrong with the world and all that they are rightfully narked off with.
Rampaging out of the quietish town of Kettering, along with Corby's Raging Speedhorn, the Defen'-crew have made enough hardcore noise for people to shout and scream about.
Leader of the pack is cute punk-grrl Gen Tasker, making the most of the proverbial frog-in-her-throat vocal technique while generally scaring the pissy shit out of anyone who may not understand Defenestration's take on nu-metal.
From Ray Zero's truly deafening opening guitar wail, 'Blood Song' does sound like Shampoo on super-acid. 'I Want To Kill' is intense enough to make you kill to mosh, before 'Away or Dead' prevails as an all-out head-charging monster of mayhem.
What's so startled the music industry is the young age of all 5 'pro-acting' band members, each one of whom has coped stupendously well with the attention focused their way and the high profile tours and gigs that have come and gone as a result of their clear talents, and prominent dirty guitar tricks of Jay and Reeves.
The triple-headed, mid-album track-listing that sees 'Ride The Snake,' 'Break The Edge' and 'Pedal To The Metal' rip-roar in quick succession may operate in the same manner as devilish subliminal messages from beyond the realms of sanity, but just allow yourself the liberty of going along with the Defenestration ride and you will - along with everyone else - survive and honestly feel a lot better for it.
Just like the final track 'Goodbye Chaos,' energetically breakneck confrontation has never felt so relevant    4/5    (Steve Rudd)
