| BRAND VIOLET - 'VOODOO' (RIVERSIDE) This zany quartet returns with another tune brimming with crazy, off-kilter Alt.-pop vibes. 'I'm a robot dominator now you're on a ventilator' sings front-babe Sally Anne Marsh with lusty relish, and there's little wonder why there is huge interest in the Brand Violet clan, with blonde Sally being surrounded by three blokes and sounding to be loving every second. B-side 'Vet' scores with its slow-waltzing harmonies that would suit 'The Addams Family' down to the ground, in fact six foot under. Quirkily disturbing, with the band members tongues collectively in cheeks, their 'School Disco' tune goes one step further, with Sally quite possibly paying tribute to Susan Sarandon's sex-bomb turn in 'The Rocky Horror Movie,' as Bowie-esque eccentricities abound to ensure all is innocently charming. 'Voodoo' is swiped from the band's 'Retrovision Coma USA' album, and with the slightly ghoulish twist to their acutely (as opposed to 'gravely') catchy music, the fact that this band actually formed on Halloween night 1999 seems to be more than just a mere coincidence. Check this out and see what you think. (Steve Rudd) www.brandviolet.com |
