| BIFFY CLYRO 57 (3-track SINGLE/ 2002/ BEGGARS BANQUET RECORDS) Buffy, bully for Biffy, can beat it. Clyro are one of the greatest bands in the UK at present, fierily breathing ground-shaking vibrancy into that rarest of scenes: lo-fi death metal. Lo-fi in they are so hesitantly touchy-feelly and sensitively soulful in spurts, while in total contrast they have the benefit of hallowed doom influences when frontman guitarist/ singer Simon Neils psyche swells and hes positively overcome with raging anger, the keynotes shifting from beautiful to beastly. And yet the moves are always inspiring sights, overpowering sounds. Lead track 57 is a full-on anthem through-&-through, while the exquisite splendour of Hope For An Angel and then the epic, wandering moodswings of Time as an imploding unit/ Waiting for green are so majestically breathtaking youre suddenly quite willing to die of asphyxiation once heard, wondering why the hell they didnt tag those 2 tracks on to their 12-track debut LP Blackened Sky for yet greater measure. Biffy Clyro ARE the future: brighter than the kid with straight-A MENSA entrance exams behind him or her (STEVE RUDD) |
