Introduction

HENRY LAWTON
Special Issue -"Psychohistory Of The Cinema"
Journal of Psychohistory 20(1) Summer 1992

With this issue of The Journal of Psychohistory it is our intent to bring forth the Psychohistorical study or film as a viable part or our work. Psychohistorical film study has attracted much interest so far and hopefully this material will help dial interest grow. The Group for the Psychohistorical Study of Film was founded in 1989 to provide a forum to encourage work and study in this exciting scholarly area. This issue includes material by members of the Film Group (Sauniders, Morrock and Lawton) as well as scholars that have been working independently of the group (Moutneer, Leslie, deMause and Raunft).

These articles probe various relations between popular film and group fantasies of the larger society. The brief exposition by deMause adapts his technique of fantasy analysis. already known to many readers of this journal as being applicable for documents, to films. The lengthy Review Essay is intended to advance a Psychohistorical theory of film and serve as a guide to the relevant literature for psychohistorian wishing to learn more about this view and interesting facet or our field.

The Group for the Psychohistorical Study of Film wishes to thank Lloyd deMause for the chance to present this issue of The Journal of Psychohistory, spotlighting an area of psychohistory that will now hopefully begin to come into its own. Hopefully you who read it will find our efforts of interest and value. We welcome further inquiries arid feedback, pro or con, from interested readers.
