Jack Kelly, named Francis Sullivan by his parents, was born in 1882. His mother died and his father was put into the state penitentiary. It is debatible whether his dad killed his mom and therefore was put in jail. Or, if his mom died and then his dad commited a crime and was encarcerated. At some point in time, (the story doesn't tell us when,) Jack changed his name from Francis Sullivan to Jack Kelly. He was put in The Refuge (a jail for kids) for stealing food and soon escaped. Continuing his life as a newsie, he lived a reasonably peaceful life until the price of the newspapers went up. He rallied many other newsies behind him and went on strike. One night during the newsie strike rally he was arrested and sent back to The Refuge, but not before he had a talk with Joseph Pulitzer and got an offer for money, freedom, and no crimanal record if he'd only become a newsie again. He took Pulitzer's offer and worked against his previous efforts to strike until the Delancie brothers tried to seriously hurt his friends David, Sarah, and Les Jacobs. He then got Brian Denton to help them (he, David, Sarah, and Les) make a newspaper which was circulated, by hand, all over New York City that told about the secrets of The Refuge and the unfair treatment of the working people of New York. With the help of David, Brian Denton, and the influence of Teddy Roosevelt, he beat Joseph Pulletser at his own game and got the price of papers back down to the original price.
