| The day is hot, hotter than it seems a place that is designed for humans to live should be. But the lake is nearby and offers a cool relief from the searing rays of the sun So you make your way there and go to the side that has rocks climbing to dizzying heights and ledges at differing levels offering perfect platforms to launch yourself into space and ultimately into the cold and refreshing waters of the lake. You climb to a moderate height and without thinking twice dive headlong into the fridgid water and as you come to the surface you yell,"oooooo ahhhh yaaaa"! Your friends at the top ask how it is and you say"great!" You dont want to tell them that it's so cold you almost lost your breath, let them find out for themselves. And they do.One by one they launch and spash and yell. Overall, the general consensus is unified ,this water is cold! Next jump you get a little bolder and go up a level. Now the water looks a little harder, a little more menacing. But here goes! The soft water feels a little harder as well and your head CRACKS through the surface. It hurts just enough that you decide feet first might be a better way to go next time. Climbing up to the uppermost ledge this time you don't look back until you're at the top. Toes over the edge, you wonder why you ever wanted to do this in the first place. your head swims and the height gives you a hollow feeling in the pit of your stomach. Now its getting hard to keep your balance as the distances give little to focus on for visual references. What have you got to lose if you dont jump? Well, face maybe, as all your buddies yelling at you from below calling you a coward might suggest. You remember the one guy who after jumping , came up once , waved to his friend in panic, and then went down never to resurface. He must have had the wind knocked out of him on entry. Ok, get your mind off these things and onto something positive, like survival! How did they teach men to jump off ships in the navy? You saw an old WWII training film once. Oh yes, hold your right elbow tight to your body with your left hand. Then pinch your nose closed with your right hand so water wont get forced in. Oh, and keep your legs together! Very important for guys to remember! Enough thinking. Time to do or die! Or do and die. One deep breath and...uhhhh....and ...JUMP! Sudden weightlessness as your feet leave the rock, then falling...wind in your ears...no time to appreciate the sensation of freefall...position,arm,elbow,nose,legs,SPLASH!...silence. you break the surface yelling hooo...ooooo ALLLRIGHT! COOOOL! Your friends all ask how it was. Nothing to it you answer, piece of cake. They ask,Going off the top again? No, you say shaking half with fear and half with cold,Im going to practice my diving off the lower rocks. |
