| "Just quickly here, a little blurb on Steve. I was his little league coach for 7 years (assistant for 1 or 2 years and head coach for 5 or 6 years). During that time, we won, I believe 4 championships (or maybe 3 with one loss in the finals). Steve made every all star team in every year he played. He was really a great player. He had a perfect swing which, he should admit, was taught to him by yours truly. He either batted first or third, as he always had the highest batting average on our team. He either played shortstop or second base, or pitched. I had two strong pitchers, who I would usually start and, then, if necessary, bring Steve in as the closer. When the pressure was on, Steve would always throw strikes. He wasn't nearly as overpowering as my other two starters, but he really had pinpoint control on his pitches. I can remember many games where I would bring Steve in to get my starters out of trouble, and I can only think of one time where he didn't come through. Yes, Steve was the starting pitcher in many games too he, almost always, gave me 4 or more solid innings. He was a coach's player, who, by his choice, went 100 percent to the game of soccer at age 13." -By Old Man Heere (Panel guest appearance, October 2003) |
