Pediatric Dentistry-Dr.Maria

Welcome to Pediatric Dentistry!

Your Child's Dental Health

Dr. Maria is concerned that your child receive the best of care, but we realize that at this stage you need to consider the options available. The options are:

1) Do Nothing. This is an option; however, the decayed teeth will only get worse without treatment and will eventually need to be extracted when they become a health threat to your child. This option does nothing to alleviate your child's dental pain. A flouride home treatment may be recommended to slow down the decay process.

2) In-Office regular dental treatment. This option means attempting to complete the recommended treatment as it is normally done in the office. This option is successful for children who are cooperative, who are old enough to understand and follow simple instructions, and sit through a procedure. Sometimes, nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is used as an adjunct to complete the treatment. It may take two or more visits to complete the treatment.

3) In-Office Oral Sedation. This option means having the child drink a medication that will sedate him/her in our office. Attempts to complete the treatment may take two or four visits depending on the success of the oral sedation. Although this treatment option does address your child's pain, the oral sedation has about a 50% success rate; in other words, your child may be able to remain very uncooperative and fearful during the visit, so limited or no treatment would be completed.

4) In-Office I.V. Sedation. This option means having your child intraveneously sedated by a licensed Board-Certified Anesthesiologist in our office and completing the entire treatment plan in one visit while your child is asleep. This is usually the option we recommend for our patients who have very limited ability to cooperate and need extensive treatment. The treatment is completed in one long visit, and then the child is seen one week later for a short post operative visit. The Anesthesiologist's fee is based on the length of time needed to complete your child's treatment.

5) Hospital General Anesthesia. This option is the same as I.V. Sedation, exept that General Anesthesia is performed in a hospital setting. This option is only recommended when there is a medical condition present, or at parent's request. Dr. Maria has preivileges at numerous facilities, and if indicated, a facility will be agreed upon.
