Japan Matchlists
This matchlists page is for anything I have from Japan, whether it is AJPW, NJPW, or one of the other feds.  Note that the Japan women have their own matchlists, just because they rock.  As I increase the number of Japan tapes that I have, I will split this up into different sections, but for now, I'm just lumping them all in together.  Once again, my comments are in orange, comments by someone other than myself are in green.

AJPW TV Classics (8 hours)

Episode #47:

Ric Flair vs. Bruiser Brody        2/11/1983   Saint Louis, MO       2/3 Falls NWA Title     (This one goes to a 60:00 draw.  Very impressive. The original footage is a little less than perfect and you can see very minor faults on certain camera angles. Totally watchable however, and very enjoyable)
Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Hercules Hernandez          1/7/1983
Jimmy Garvin vs. David Von Erich        6/17/1983     Fort Worth, TX. WCCW Texas Title (I haven't gotten to watch most of this tape.....but how is this AJPW?  Same for Flair and Brody, especially when the matches took place in the US.  Mystery of life I guess)
Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Tommy Rich         2/25/1983    UN Title
Tommy Rich vs. The Great Kabuki      3/2/1983

Episode #58:

Dory Funk Jr. vs. Stan Hansen          4/26/1984      (At the end of the match, Bruiser Brody comes out from what seems to be nowhere, and annihilates Dory with Hansen's help. Awesome!)
Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Rick Martel           5/13/1984      St. Paul, MN     AWA World Title
Stan Hansen vs. Giant Baba        7/31/1984     PWF Title
Harley Race vs. Ric Flair          5/22/1984
Jumbo Tsuruta vs. Kerry Von Erich      (This is the infamous match where Jumbo goes nuts and starts stomping Kerry's hand therefore making him unable to execute the discus punch. I'll bet this was good old Fritz's plan as his son would drop the NWA Title to Flair only two days later (ON THE NEXT TAPE! Episode #59). Word has it that Fritz talked about Kerry's loss on WCCW TV as if he'd been screwed by the Japanese ref and Jumbo himself!)

Episode #59:

Kerry Von Erich  vs.  Ric Flair     5/24/ 984       NWA Title change
Stan Hansen/Bruiser Brody vs.    Giant Baba/Dory Funk Jr.      826/1984     PWF Tag Title
Great Kabuki  vs.   Umanoseke Ueda        6/5/1984
Tiger Mask II (Misawa) v. La Fiera        8/26/1984      (This is Mitsuharu Misawa's debut as Tiger Mask. Watch as La Fiera seems to kill himself on more than one ocassion.)
Terry Gordy vs. Jumbo Tsuruta       8/29/1984     INT'L Title

Episode #65:

British Bulldogs vs Tiger Mask II/Mighty Inoue        11/30/85
Terry Funk/Dory Funk Jr.   vs.   Terry Gordy/Art Crews       10/22/85
Terry Funk/Dory Funk Jr. vs. The Road Warriors         10/19/85
Stan Hansen vs. Rick Martel          12/29/85      AWA World Title   (First 5 minutes are clipped, and the rest of complete)
Road Warriors   vs.   Genichiro Tenryu/Jumbo Tsuruta        10/21/85
Mil Mascaras vs. Norio Honaga        10/22/85
Ric Flair vs. Jumbo Tsuruta        10/19/1985       (Flair holds the title, but this is a Non-Title match)
Dynamite Kid   vs.   Tiger Mask II       11/27/85
Ric Flair/Rick Martel   vs.   Genichiro Tenryu/Jumbo Tsuruta      10/22/85    (One day after their historic title vs title match, Flair and Martel team up for what is maybe the only time two reigning world champs have teamed together)

AJPW New Year's Giant Series 1997

Toshiaki Kawada/Akira Taue  vs.  Steve Williams/Johnny Ace    Double Tag Titles  ****
Mitsuharu Misawa  vs.  Kenta Kobashi      Triple Crown    *****  (this match goes over 40 minutes and just totally rules it....I haven't seen Misawa vs. Kawada from 6/3/1994, but I find it hard to believe it could top this....wow!!!)
Hiroshi Hase  vs.  Kentaro Shiga
Akira Taue  vs.  Jun Akiyama

AJPW October Giant Series 1998

Mitsuharu Misawa/Takao Omori  vs.  Kenta Kobashi/Jinsei Shinzaki   (This isn't a whole match, it's JIP and clipped on different points....the only real point to it is that Kobashi debuts THE BURNING F'N HAMMER!!!! and pins Misawa, setting up the next match)
Mitsuharu Misawa  vs.  Kenta Kobashi        Triple Crown    ****3/4    (This is a very good and entertaining match and both guys hit almost all of their special moves.....their match from NY Giant Series 97 is better, but you can't go wrong here either)
Toshiaki Kawada/Akira Taue vs. Jun Akiyama/Kenta Kobashi       Double Tag Titles   ****1/4
Mitsuharu Misawa vs. Jinsei Shinzaki

NJPW  Best of Super Juniors 1997

Jushin Lyger  vs.  Chavo Guerrero Jr.
Yoshihiro Tajiri  vs.  Shinjiro Ohtani   (Tajiri gets the MAJOR upset over The Bitchmaster, aka Lord Ohtani, here)
Koji Kanemoto  vs.  Tatsuhito Takaiwa
Jushin Lyger  vs.  Gran Naniwa   (lots of clipping here)
Jushin Lyger  vs.  Tatsuhito Takaiwa  (Takaiwa hits an amazing Super DVD in this match...wow!!!)
Koji Kanemoto  vs.  Doc Dean???  (more massive clipping here, I'm just guessing on the jobber's name, I had to really search around the net to find this guy's name)
Koji Kanemoto  vs.  Jushin Lyger  ****
Shinjiro Ohtani  vs.  El Samurai   **** (some clipping, but still worth the rating)
Koji Kanemoto vs.  El Samurai was supposed to be right here, but on version that I have, that match is not on the tape for some reason.  Damn it!!!!  It figures I'd get to miss out on a fuckin ***** classic.

NJPW J Crown 1996: All or Nothing
***note--For anybody not too aware of what this tournament was about, the participants all held a major Jr. Title and they put them all on the line in this single elimination tournament, so the winner ends up holding eight belts.....later in the year, Ultimo Dragon would win the WCW Cruiserweight Title to unify all 9 titles***

Great Sasuke  (IWGP Jr. Title) vs.  Masayoshi Motegi (NWA Jr. Heavyweight Title)  Quarterfinal Match
Jushin Lyger   (British Jr. Heavyweight Title)   vs.    Ultimo Dragon (WAR Jr. Int'l Heavyw eight Title)    Quarterfinal Match (This match is really short as Dragon wins with La Majistral cradle in about 4 minutes)
Shinjiro Ohtani (UWA Light Heavyweight Title) vs.   Negro Casas (NWA Welterweight Title)    Quarterfinal Match
Gran Hamada   (WWA Jr. Heavyweight Title)  vs.  El Samurai   (WWF Light Heavyweight Title)    Quarterfinal Match   (This is the part of the tournament that always gets me thinking....we all know the WWF has never given two shits about the LHW Title, but does everyone realize what happened when Dragon unified the titles?  By winning this tournament, he had eight belts, INCLUDING the WWF LHW Title, which he then went on to defend ON WCW NITRO!!!!!  IN 1996!!!!  It's obvious that NOBODY was paying attention in the WWF at that point)
Shinjiro Ohtani   vs.  Ultimo Dragon       Semi Final  Match     ****3/4   (great match, one of the best Jr. matches you'll ever find)
Great Sasuke  vs.   El Samurai    ***3/4  SemiFinal Match
Great Sasuke v Ultimo Dragon    ****1/2    (Sasuke takes a NASTY brainbuster in this match that supposedly cracked his skull....he still comes back to win the match though)

NJPW/WWF Junior Title Tournament  2/7/1984

Davey Boy Smith  vs.  The Cobra  (although I don't feel like watching it at the moment to give it a rating, this is a good match back when Davey wasn't roided out yet)
Dynamite Kid  vs.  Davey Boy Smith  (again, same deal)
Dynamite Kid  vs.  The Cobra  ****1/2  (I can remember enough about this one to give it that rating, and Cobra hits a gorgeous Space Flying Tiger Drop in this one.....remember, this was in 1984!!!!)

NJPW Super J Cup 1994
***note---This is undoubtedly one of the best shows ever, and a must-have if you are a wrestling fan***

Dean Malenko  vs.  Gedo    Round 1 Match
Shinjiro Ohtani  vs.  Super Delfin   Round 1 Match   (Somehow, someway, Delfin gets the win over The Bitchmaster, aka Lord Ohtani....what the hell?)
Black Tiger  (Eddie Guerrero) vs.   Taka Michinoku     Round 1
El Samurai   vs.   Masayoshi Motegi       Round 1
Negro Casas   vs.    Ricky Fuji   Round 1
Jushin Liger vs. Hayabusa       Round 1  ***3/4   (This is Ezaki's first match as Hayabusa and it's a classic!)  (Personally, I think it's a GOOD match, not a classic, but that what opinions are for)

Gedo vs. Super Delfin         Round 2
Wild Pegasus vs. Black Tiger      Round 2  (Benoit and Sasuke got the byes which is why you don't see them in the first round.....and in this match, I'd like to point out why these two guys are two of the greatest wrestlers in the world, and it's not from an incredibly complex series of moves or a great move, but a simple move.....watch as Eddy leaps up to the top rope holding onto Benoit's arm for a move.....Eddy is about to lose his balance, but watch as Chris flexes every single muscle in his body to keep Eddy from falling.....simple stuff like that separates good wrestlers from great wrestlers)
El Samurai  vs.   Great Sasuke      Round 2   **** (good match, and the crowd is SUPER hot for both guys)
Jushin Liger vs. Ricky Fuji        Round 2

Wild Pegasus vs. Gedo     Round 3   (this is some kind of fuckin joke right....frickin Gedo in the same ring with Chris f'n Benoit???)
Jushin Liger vs. Great Sasuke   Round 3    ****3/4     (I've always liked this match better than the final match, even with Sasuke botching the ending, because Liger is right there to cover for him......a great match)

Wild Pegasus   vs. Great Sasuke    Finals    ****3/4   (another great match, and Sasuke's performance after having JUST GONE 20 MINUTES!!!! in the previous match is wondrous to behold)

WAR  Super J Cup 1995
***note--pretty much every match on this show was ***+ or so....definately a must have tape***

Gran Naniwa  vs.  Damien 666    Round 1   (this is a comedy match all the way.  One guy calls out a name of a big name wrestler, then they hit that guy's trademark move.  They poke fun at Chosyu, Misawa, Genichiro Tenryu, Shinzaki, Muta, and a couple more different guys.....Damien finishes up with a huffing and puffing interview after the "grueling" match.  I couldn't stop laughing here)
Shinjiro Ohtani  vs. Masaaki Mochizuki  Round 1  (from comedy to the BITCHMASTER!!!!  This is a worked shoot type match, and Ohtani basically decides that Mochizuki's right leg is really his, and Mochizuki has just been borrowing it his whole life, and Ohtani wants it back)
Ultimo Dragon  vs.  Shoichi Funaki    Round 1
Gedo vs. Masayoshi Motegi   Round 1  (fuckin Gedo....)
Dos Caras vs. El Samurai   Round 1    (you only need to know two things about this match....Dos Caras is an old, but stacked, bastard, and he thinks up the most fucked up submission shit you've ever seen)
Chris Jericho vs. Hanzo Nakajima     Round 1

Jushin Liger vs. Gran Naniwa    Round 2   (Liger and Benoit got the byes this year)
Wild Pegasus (Benoit of course)  vs. Chris Jericho    Round 2 ****
Ultimo Dragon vs. Shinjiro Ohtani     Round 2     ****1/4
Dos Caras vs. Gedo    Round 2    (fuckin Gedo.....)

Jushin Liger   vs.  Ultimo Dragon    Semi-Finals    ****1/2  (very good match)
Wild Pegasus  vs.  Gedo   Semi-Finals   (I still refuse to accept the fact that Gedo was put over Benoit)
Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Psicosis     Non-Tournament Exhibition Match  ****  (This match is summed up by 4 words....Rey hits the rana....the whole match is centered on how many times and ways Rey can hit the rana...he even hits the dragon rana to the outside.....don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining cause it was a very good and entertaining match and the crowd was into it, but they've better elsewhere)

Jushin Liger vs. Gedo    Finals   (yeah, Gedo made it to the finals just because he works for WAR, but is there ANY doubt about who is going over here???)
