| Chapter one Ps: most of the squares are puncutuation symbols and things like camas and indents I had a zero in my cross-hairs, and I was trying to put him ahead to get a hit. I eased the stick back to push them forward. I was easing my finger on the finger notch and I herd the plug, plug, plug of the guns launching the bullets whizzing down the barrel toward the target of that god dam zero. The bullets hit there mark and the plane began to smoke and went down. When the plane exploded on the ground I closed my eyes. I felt relaxed, but it wasnt a safe relaxed. It was a worried relaxed, a scared relax. Was listening to my wingmen congratulate me. BANG, BANG.........shrug, shrug, put, put, drone. I felt shaken so startled at what was happening. I was being shot at, I was seriously being killed. I suddenly new what it was like. The Bang sound came back, and smoke came from my right wing. I could see the holes coming closer, and closer to my cockpit. Suddenly the glass in the cockpit shattered around me. I closed my eyes, I thought of back home, back in Manhattan. I thought of standing outside of a store on 5th ave.. looking at the beautiful buildings in fall. The breeze flowing through the big buildings like it was a tunnel. My friend with me Tommy was about to say something. Tommy had Joined the flying tigers with me. It was a good job. The flying tigers wasnt a part of the armed forces. It was a private United States funded force of Curtis P-40 Warhawks. It was voluntary. There were no drafts and it really wasnt called the Flying Tigers it was really called American Volunteer Group. The AVG looked like a very promising place for a adventurous 18 year old and his friend. The pay was good, the food was good and you travel to your destination via civilian cruise, not to arouse suspicion as America was still nurtural at this point in WW2, so I decided to signed up. "Manhattan" The radio crackled (That was my nickname scince I was born there and had a heavy NY accent). I woke in a flame . My canopy was blone away so the ashes in front of me blew directly into my face. I thought of my options and realized just as I started think of them that there wasnt any. I looked to my right to get onto the wing and jump. There was nothing but ground. I could make out the people at my airfield getting into a truck. Probably rushing towards my plane trying to judge were the plane would crash. I looked to my left to find a small flaming stub. It was something, I decided to climb up and on to the wing .It was amazing. Better than in a cockpit, it was like a true bird. I finally summed up my nerves and jumped. My parachute opened and it was surprisingly relaxing, a nice relaxing. I landed I a pit of hay. It was so silent until the roar of the tuck coming near. I yelled and the truck started to steer towards me. I yelled out again and the truck stopped. I was swarmed by my matnance team. Low Shot, Zulu, and Mr. Prop came closer. (Keep in mind that those names are nicknames from the late 30's). I hope you are doing better than your plane, muttered Low Shot. We called him low shot because that was what he told us to call him. He said it was what his WW1 buddies called him. He was one of the oldest of all of us. He was 38, he flew the fist true fighter planes in WW1 and when he came home he became an outcast. He was kicked out of the USAAF for unspoken reasons and when the AVG was started he was one of the first on the list. |
