Part 4 - To Know the Difference

It was gone almost instantly, but it didn't matter.  She'd hurt him, and she knew it.
But she didn't gloat or grin in triumph.
"Vegeta, it isn't a bad thing to feel!"
"Not for you." He said, his voice thick with suppressed emotion.  "I-" he paused
and lifted his eyes to search hers.  She wasn't angry with him, but she stared at
him expectantly.  He raked his fingers through his hair and sighed.
She saw his torment, and realized suddenly that that was the one emotion
she'd always seen in him but never really noticed until just then.  And just like that
the conviction went out of her.  It wasn't right to do this to him, it was obviously too
difficult for him to open up, fear was preventing him as surely as pride.
     "It's alright, Vegeta.  I'm sorry-"
"No!" he snapped, startling her.  "You are right. But-"
     "You don't have to say-"
"Will you just listen for a minute?" he snapped, eyeing her in annoyance.  But
that emotion faded instantly, as his brow furrowed in distress.
She wanted to kick herself.  Nearly every emotion she thought he denied was
apparent in his gaze.  How could she have missed it before?  By provoking him
she had only invited anger, perhaps if she had just tried speaking to him..
"Anger is the only emotion I was allowed to feel for so long, it's hard to forget
that.  I'm- I'm not trying to lie to you." He said, his voice almost sounded pleading.
He wanted her to believe him.
And she wanted to believe him too.  She searched his eyes and saw a startling
range of emotion.
"I know Vegeta.  I just don't understand.  And I just forget sometimes.  You are
so much like us whether you want to believe it or not, and I think bottling all your
emotions inside is doing more harm than good.  You don't have to do this
anymore!  No one is going to hurt you for being happy!" she said, her eyes
pleading.
His features suddenly contorted in agony and his hands rose instinctively to
cover his face.  He spun away from her and took a few faltering steps away.
She immediately dashed forward and caught his elbow. "Vegeta.. No one wants
you to be miserable the rest of your life."  He froze and his arms fell lifelessly to his
sides.  The pain in his face was astonishing.  He closed his eyes, and tried to
take a step back, but she grabbed him, wound her arms around his waist, and
pressed herself against him, offering comfort the only way she knew how.  She
felt him trembling, and inwardly winced.  This was her fault in a way.  His hands
slowly unclenched and rose to envelope her.
Bulma felt a sigh escape her.  It was …nice to be held by him.  She hoped her
was feeling a modicum of what she felt.  Perhaps it would calm him.
Suddenly he tensed and try to draw away but she held him tighter, refusing to
let him run away.
"Onna-" he began. And the door swung open with such force that it smacked
the wall behind it with jarring force.
"What the hell is going on?" Yamcha cried.
