SUMMARY: Vegeta's lack of trust keeps him awake
DAY ONE
His eyelids snapped open in alarm for the third time in the past few
minutes. They had been growing heavy for the better part of an
hour while he struggled against sleep.
An irrational fear was making complete relaxation
impossible. He was afraid to fall asleep, to succumb to his own
exhaustion. He was afraid that if he closed his eyes, the moment
his limbs relaxed and his breathing grew deep and even, something would
happen.
He knew he was just being overly cautious, at least
he thought he was. The truth was he was nearly bordering on
panic, if the fine trembling that surged through his arms was any
indication.
He dared not sleep. He dared not. Just
because he was surrounded by weak humans with no ki and Namekians with
no balls didn't mean a thing. Any one of them could sneak up on
him and slit his throat the minute he was unconscious. And he
wished they would hurry up and try already, he was getting to the point
that keeping his eyes open was nearly impossible.
He stood up from the couch that he had been slumped
into, and ignoring the curious glances of the Earth fighters and the
few Namekians clustered around the television he made his way to the
front door.
Every eye in the room noted his unusual lack of
grace as he stumbled through the doorway, but no one made a move to
help or hinder him in any way.
The sun was still up but it was dipping toward the horizon and tingeing
the sky a pale orange. He was relieved to see only one sun.
It was the only reason for such exhaustion. On Namek he had
caught maybe a half hour of sleep after being up for days. Vegeta
had had two suns but they set only an hour apart. On Namek one
was always up. He had only been able to sleep after he had
reached a state of exhaustion. One he had still yet to
remedy. And now he was too anxious and mistrustful to let down
his guard.
As he glanced around he didn't find any place
preferable to the interior of the house. Namekians strolled
through the gardens, and several raised their eyes as he left the
building and cast him hate-filled glares. He offered them a
condescending smile as he walked past.
His smile finally faded after a few minutes.
Intimidating the Namekians was too easy but still amusing, although it
didn't help him stay awake one way or another.
He sighed and glanced around at the trees
surrounding the area. They were pitiful. Too thin and
young, each. The branches were too high and too fragile.
Had he his tail still the issue would have easily been ignored.
But if he did climb up into one there was no way to keep him in place
if he did fall asleep.
He growled low in his throat. He had little
choice. He could think of nothing but sleep. He almost
wished the humans hadn't fed him as soon as they had arrived
earlier. A full Saiyan with time on there hands was usually
inclined to sleep. Especially when there was no one to fight or
fuck.
He sighed and rubbed his eyes, a yawn tearing from
his throat despite all he tried to control it. He looked around
again, any tree fat enough would do. But there were none and the
heaviness in his limbs was increasing until it felt as if he was moving
through water.
He headed back inside, ignoring the curious gazes of
the human and Namekians. He found his spot on the couch still
empty and slumped into the soft cushions with a sigh. This was
definitely not going to help, in fact his eyes were closing as he
kicked his boots off and drew his knees up to his chest. Two
warrior Namekians taking up the other two spaces in the couch eyed him
warily for a moment, but he pointedly ignored them. As soon as he
lay his head on his knees his eyes slid shut and his breathing grew
steady. But as one of the Namekians rose he immediately jerked
awake, glaring at the green alien in annoyance and carefully veiled
alarm. The Namekian's eyes narrowed hatefully and Vegeta let out
a low growl in warning.
Conversation abruptly halted when everyone heard the
vicious snarl. The Namekian took up a fighting stance even as the
other tried to calm and dissuade him with carefully chosen words.
As soon as indecision crept into the Namekian's eyes he sneered and
closed his eyes again. The fools didn't dare attempt anything for
fear of offending their human hosts.
Vegeta had no such qualms. He could just as
easily pitch the stupid alien through the plate-glass sliding
doors. But only after some rest. If he didn't get some he
would not be able to fend off any coming attacks.
He snorted softly to himself. What the hell
was his problem? Why was he so nervous? Was it because of
what had just happened to him? He was looking for an attack at
every corner. And he should have known better. He felt
silly thinking the humans or the Namekians might dare to attack
him. They were a lot of cowards.
If he had thought otherwise he would have never come
here. He could survive anywhere. But he was tired of
struggling for every little thing.
He was done with that part of his life. He had
bought his freedom with his life and amazingly, he been given a second
chance. He didn't really see it as that but more as a mistake on
Kakarotto's part. One that he felt certain he would make the fool
regret once he ascended.
He felt a hand on his shoulder and he jerked in alarm, nearly
falling off of the couch. The room held only himself, the
blue-haired female, the half breed, and the female's stupid
mother. He blinked wearily and rubbed his eyes, stifling a
yawn.
The girl beckoned him with a wry smile and he slowly
got to his feet, swaying a bit unsteadily and then stumbling after
her. She led him to a room with more... stuff than he felt
necessary in it. A bed, a closet and a bathroom were sufficient
but there were also several electronic devices, one of which had a
screen for viewing whatever trash they happened to watch on it.
The door closed behind him as the female murmured something he didn't
quite catch.
He tore off his ruined armor and battle suit and
collapsed on the bed with a groan. His back hurt terribly from the
wounds he'd sustained, but he'd been healed enough to be fully
functional. He sighed, the bed was soft. It would take some
getting used to after sleeping of hard mattresses and even worse, in
the stupid pods! But he only lay there for a moment before rising to
his feet with a pained groan and shuffling to the door.
There had to be a lock on his door. If not he
was going to have to block it with something, no matter how his muscles
protested. But thankfully there was a simple lock on the door
which he would definitely hear if it was being broken. He then
went to the windows. Each was locked. He sighed in relief
and crawled into bed, at last he could relax.
Moments later, he slept.
The End
