Descendants of Samuel Morse
Generation No. 1
1.
SAMUEL3 MORSE (THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born Bef. June 12, 1576 in Boxted, County Essex,
England, and died June 20, 1654 in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He married (1) ELIZABETH JASPER June 29, 1602 in Redgrave, England, daughter of LANCELOT JASPER. She was born 1587 in England, and died 1654
in Dedham, Norfolk County, Massachusetts.
He married (2) ELIZABETH JASPER June 29, 1602 in Redgrave, Eng., daughter of LANCELOT JASPER and ROSE SHEPARD. She was born 1579 in Redgrave, Suffolk,
ENG., and died June 20, 1655 in Medfield, MA.
Notes
for SAMUEL MORSE:
Samuel
was born in Boxted, England. He was baptized on June 12, 1576 in the parish
where his father was rector. There is
a dispute as to whom the parents of Samuel Morse were. Morse and Leavitt in the
Morse Genealogy feel that Samuel was the son of Richard Morse and Margaret
Symson. They were married on February 15, 1586 and a son, Samuel, was baptized
on July 25, 1587. They feel that this identification fits better with the age
of Samuel at his Death, 67. G. Andrews
Moriarty in an article printed in 1929 feels that the above identification was
wrong. He believes that Samuel was the son of Thomas Morse. He bases writes
that Samuel, the passenger on the Increase was the "second son and second child of Rev. Thomas Morse by his
first wife, Margaret (King) Morse. This Samuel was baptized at Boxted, co.
Essex, 12 June 1576, and would have been, therefore, almost 59 years old when
the Increase sailed, an age which would exclude him From consideration were it
not for the frequent errors in the ages given in the shipping lists, ...and for
the following facts that make it likely that he was the emigrant to New
England. Samuel, son of Rev. Thomas Morse, Had two brothers named John and
Daniel (an earlier brother Daniel having died young, it is supposed), an own
sister named Sara, and five half brothers Joseph, Jeremiah, James, Nathaniel,
and Philip. His seven brothers and sister were named, with Samuel himself, in
the will of their father, dated 10 Nov. 1596. Of these names, John, Daniel,
Joseph, and Sara were given to children of Samuel and Elizabeth Morse of New
England, and they Had one grandson named Jeremiah and two grandsons named
Nathaniel. Two others of their eight known children were named respectively
Thomas (if the Thomas Morse who was in Dedham, Mass. In 1640 was a son of
Samuel) and Elizabeth, Thomas bearing the name, presumably, of his fathers
father and Elizabeth the name of her mother.
The remaining children were Mary and Samuel. Moreover, Samuel, son of
Rev. Thomas Morse, was living (or was believed to be living) on 2 Sept. 1638,
when his half brother, James Morse of Barham, co. Suffolk, names him in his
will, together with his (the testator's) own brothers, Joseph, Nathaniel, and
Philip. The child of his half brother Daniel Morse, probably then deceased, and
his half brother, Mr. John Morse of 'Rumforde'. The testator's own brother
Jeremiah is the only one of the brothers not mentioned in the will-for what
reason is not known, as he was then living. James Morse also left a legacy to
his 'cousin', that is, his nephew, Joseph Morse, undoubtable the son of Samuel.
The testator does not, however, state where his brother Samuel and his 'cousin'
Joseph were then living. Furthermore, the Samuel Morse who embarked on the
Increase in 1635 Had a wife Elizabeth whose age was given as 48 years. Now the
parish registers of Redgrave, co. Suffolk, record the marriage of Samuel Morse
and Elizabeth Jasper on 29 June 1602 and that of Joseph Morse and Ann Jasper on
Oct. 29 1605; and they show also that these two brides were daughters of
Lancelot Jasper and that Elizabeth was baptized at Redgrave 30 Jan. 1579/80.
Lancelot Jasper in his will, dated 17 Feb. 1616/17, mentions his daughters
Elizabeth Morse and Ann Morse. That the Samuel Morse and Joseph Morse who
married these two sisters at Redgrave were the sons of Rev. Thomas Morse
appears extremely likely, when the geographical situation of some of Suffolk
and Essex parishes mentioned in this affair is studied. Stoke-by-Nayland the
home of the probable father and grandfather of Rev. Thomas Morse is in southern
Suffolk, and only two miles north From Nayland, which is on the River Stour,
that separates Suffolk From Essex. Boxted, where Rev. Thomas Morse was vicar
From 1573 to 1578 and where he apparently continued to live for some five years
more, his fifth child having been baptized there in 1583, was only a mile or
two southeast From Nayland, on the Essex side of the Stour, and Dedham, also in
Essex, was a few miles farther down the River. In 1583 Rev. Thomas Morse became
rector of Hinderclay, a parish in northern Suffolk, about thirteen miles
northeast From Bury St. Edmunds and very near Redgrave, on the Norfolk border. A
short distance easterly From Redgrave was Palgrave, where Joseph Morse, a son
of Rev. Thomas Morse, settled. Samuel Morse, therefore, must have been taken by
his father to Hinderclay when he was only seven years old, and probably
remained there at least until he was seventeen or eighteen years of age, for
his father did not leave Hinderclay and become rector of Foxearth in Essex
until about 1594. Presumably Samuel became acquainted with the neighboring
parish of Redgrave while his father was rector of Hinderclay, and in 1602
married a Redgrave young woman, his brother Joseph marrying a sister of
Samuel's wife some three years later. Certainly this Samuel Morse, the son of
Rev. Thomas Morse is much more likely to be the man who married Elizabeth
Jasper of Redgrave then either of the other two Samuels who have been
considered, the first belonging to Stratford St. Mary, on the extreme southern
border of Suffolk, and the second having been baptized at Dedham in Essex , in
1587 and being therefore too young to have married in 1602 Elizabeth (Jasper)
Morse, to be sure, would have been 55 years of age when the Increase sailed,
instead of 48 as recorded in the shipping list; but this discrepancy may be
disregarded, as already explained, in the face of the other evidence. It may be added that Samuel Morse's son
Joseph, whose age is given in the shipping list of the Increase as 20 years,
was baptized at Redgrave 2 May 1613 and was therefore about 22 years old in the
spring of 1635, an age that corresponds better with the age in the shipping
list than do the ages of his father and mother." He married Elizabeth
Jasper at Redgrave, county Suffolk on June 29, 1602. He and his family lived in
a number of towns in England, including Redgrave and Burgate. They were living
in Burgate in 1626 when he and Elizabeth witnessed the will of Anne
Copping. Elizabeth and Samuel Had the
following children; Thomas, Elizabeth Daniel, John (1607/8-1657), Daniel
(-1688), Joseph (1613-1654), Sara (1616-), and Mary (1620-1691). Samuel and his family moved to New England
on the "Increase". This ship, under the command of Robert Lea, sailed
From London on April 15, 1635. Accompanying Samuel and his wife were their
children, Thomas, Elizabeth, John, and David. They also took their two year old
grand-daughter, Elizabeth Daniel.
Samuel first settled in Watertown, Mass. Later, they were among the
first settlers of the newly formed town named Contentment. This name was later
changed to Dedham. Samuel became a
member of the church in Dedham in 1641. He was chosen as Selectman in the first
town meeting. Samuel was also granted land in Medfield, Mass. There he built a
house which lasted until Feb. 21, 1675 when it was burned down by attacking
Indians. Samuel died on June 20, 1654
in Medfield, Mass. His will reads as follows;
"I, Samuel Morse, being sick and weak in body but of good and
perfect memory, praised be God therefor; doe make this my last will and
testament in manner as followeth; First I bequeath my soul into the hands of a
mercyful God that gave it, with assured hope of everlasting life through the
gracious merits of my dear Saviour and blessed Redeemer Jesus Christ. As for that Little estate of outward things
which the Lord hath been pleased to bestow Upon me, whether they be moveable or
immoveable, as houses, lands, chattel, household stuff etc., I will and
bequeath them all unto Elizabeth Morse, my dear wife to enjoy, posess and make
use of her life, during the term thereof, and after her decease divided amongst
my children, John Morse, Daniell, Mary, Bullin, & Ann Morse, the widow of
my dearly beloved son Joseph Morse, deceased, who with my said children shall
have an equal portion Upon a just division with them for the children's sake of
my said beloved Joseph. Therefore my will is that the above named Ann, wife of
my dear Joseph shall make an equal distribution of all that portion Upon
division unto every child of my sonne Joseph when they and every one of them
shall grow up to the age of one and twenty years. Lastly, I constitute and appoint
Elizabeth my beloved wife the sole executrix of this my last will. In witness
whereof I have put my hand the day and year above written." Samuel Morse In the presence of Henry Smith, Ralph Wheelock and Samuel
Bullin. This estate was appraised on November
27, 1654 for the value of 124 pounds 7s. This was not the extent of his wealth
however, as he Had apparently disposed of his property a few months prior to
his Death.

Notes
for EPHRAIM WIGHT:
7.
EPHRAIM2 WIGHT (Thomas1), born January 27, 1645, was baptized in Dedham,
February 8, 1645. He moved with the family to Medfield about 1650, but his name
occurs on the Dedham tax-lists. He married in Medfield March 2, 1668, Lydia
Morse, baptized in Dedham April 13, 1645 (Morse's Memorial of the Morses, 20;
Morse's Sherburn and Holliston, 178.). Ephraim was made a freeman October 8,
1672 (Register III., 242.). He and his brother Henry were appointed executors
of their father's will, which was probated in 1674. Ephraim was the residuary
legatee of his father's estate and received also by special devise the
homestead on Green Street. His name appears among the Medfield proprietors in
1675. His house seems to have escaped the ravages of King Philip's Indians in
February, 1676, although the residence of Thomas2 Wight (4) adjoining was
burned. Ephraim's subscription of "2 bushelles of Endian corne" for
building the "new brick college" at Cambridge occurs with many
others. In 1697 he and his wife appear among the members of the parish church,
Medfield (Tilden's Medfield, 108, 109). Ephraim was also interested in Medway
property. He was one of twelve citizens of Medfield who accepted the offer of
that town "to give fifty acres of land where it may be most convenient for
the encouragement of any that would adventure to build a gristmill upon Charles
River." This was the first mill built at Rockville, in Medway. When the
Black Swamp of Medway was laid out in 1702, 7 rods and 4 feet fell to Ephraim.
(Jameson's Medway, 37, 40.) He never resided in Medway, his son Nathaniel3 (41)
being the first Wight to reside within the limits of that town. Ephraim's
mental condition late in life is to be inferred from the fact that Nathaniel
Partridge and Thomas Boyden, husbands of his daughters Lydia (37) and Deborah
(44) "protested against the so-called will of our honored father, knowing
him to be a religious, good man, but not capable to make a will these seven
years last past." (Tilden's Medfield, 512.) Notwithstanding this protest
the will which was made September 27, 1717, was probated March 11, 1722-3. The
original Wight homestead went ?? his son Daniel (42). Ephraim died February 26, 1722-3, his wife had died July 14,
1722--both in Medfield. Their children had been born there.
