In my letter of 27 October 1997 (S/1997/998), I informed the Security Council about the readiness of the United Nations to monitor the return of political leaders who had left Cambodia after the July events and their resumption of political activities. In its letter dated 30 October 1997 (S/1997/999), the Security Council expressed support for the suggested monitoring operation and welcomed my intention to keep it regularly informed.

I should like to inform you that the monitoring operation of returning political leaders was successfully completed on 30 September 1998. I wish to express my sincere thanks to all those Member States whose generous contributions made this operation possible. I should also like to express my gratitude to the Government of Cambodia whose support was indispensable for the success of the monitoring operation.

I should be grateful, Mr. President, if you would kindly make the present letter available to the members of the Security Council.
