LETTER DATED 13 NOVEMBER 1998 FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
ADDRESSED TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE SECURITY COUNCIL

I write to inform you that, on 16 July 1998, I wrote to Samdech Hun Sen, Second Prime Minister of the Government of Cambodia, proposing that the Office of my Personal Representative in Cambodia be extended for a further six-month period starting 27 July 1998. In their reply dated 23 July, Mr. Ung Huot and Mr. Hun Sen agreed that the Office of my Personal Representative in Cambodia should continue its functions pending the establishment by the newly elected National Assembly of a new government that would decide on the future of the Office.

As soon as a new government is established, and subject to its approval, I propose to further extend the Office for a period of 12 months in order to continue its present functions in keeping with the spirit and principles of the Paris Agreements.

I should be grateful if you would kindly bring this matter to the attention of the members of the Security Council.

(Signed) Kofi A. ANNAN
