Snatch

Mr. Ritchie Follows Up

On His Promising Start...

This film was laugh out loud funny.

If you haven't yet seen Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels check that one out first for a bonus of a few nice in jokes between the two films by Mr. Madonna du Jour.

Snatch has the same snazzy editing style for action sequences that really adds to the frenetic pace of the plot. The characters are just that, flawed, funny and failing all over the place. The dialogue is razor-sharp, not a missed cue or extra line to be found.

The most arresting difference between this film and Lock, Stock...is the budget as spent on actors. He has Brad Pitt, Dennis Farina and a few other familiar faces scattered in with his favorite fellows. I've noticed he just doesn't have female characters (he certainly has married a strong enough woman for an entire cast) of note, with the exception of Brad Pitt's mom in this film. Pitt may have seemed the biggest casting coup at the time, but with Benecio Del Torro toting an Oscar around these days, the tables have turned in a manner befitting Snatch.

The film is a fine example of screwball comedy structure with heist film dynamics.
