Segregation
-de facto segregation: separation of groups not based upon law and/or government
-de jure segregation: separation of groups based upon law and/or government
-Segregation groups (i.e. Ku Klux Klan) are protected by freedom of association
Discrimination: acts of irrational, suspicion or hatred, directed upon a certain
group of people
Racism: a belief that human races have distinct characteristics and that one's
own race is superior to others
-political aspect: based upon this superiority, the "superior" race has the "right"
to rule others
Affirmative action: any and all programs that expand the opportunities for women and
minority groups into areas they were previously denied
Equality
-Equality of opportunity: everyone has the same opportunity to succeed
(everyone is equal at the starting point)
-Equality of outcome: greater uniformity in results;
sharing wealthy, power, etc.
-however, if the government tries to fight for equality of outcome, equality of opportunity
will be denied
