Ancient Egyptian Names

For Creating a Character in Pi-Ramesses

These names are known from New Kingdom, Dynasty 18-19. All of them where living humans and all of them had an occupation or position. Their names have come down to us from inscriptions in tombs and on stelae and also from ostraca and papyrii.

Of course there were many many more, if we think of the long history of ancient Egypt. Many names, just like today, went a long time back. It is quite possible to find out what the occupations of these persons were.

Please note that not all female names has the suffix -t. Also male names can end this way, like female names can end without the suffix -t. Sometimes a name was used by both male and female, like Mentuhotep and a few more.

Names, both for people and for objects, had a special importance in ancient Egypt. It was considered an essential part of the individual and a determining factor for the eternal life of the 'Ka' and the 'Ba' in the Afterlife. Parents named their children as soon as they were born, so that the individual would come into existence properly. A person was said to live as long as his name was pronounced. That is why name inscriptions were important in tombs and on monuments, and why names of certain disliked kings and rulers were obliterated after their reign, so as to be totally destructed and taken away both from existence in the Afterlife and in the memory of the living.
