The records above are as we found them in doing our research of the records.
The following information taken from the Henckel Genealogy
page 222. 583 Sarah Teter born June 19, 1773 in Augusta [later Rockingham] County,
Virginia [now Pendleton County, West Virginia]; died October 27, 1815 Clinton
County, Ohio: married December 24, 1795 Pendleton County, Virginia to Jacob Helmick,
Jr., son of Jacob and Barbara [_____________] Helmick. He was born May 21 1773
in Hampshire County, Virginia, [now Hardy County, West Virginia]; died November 8, 1860,
Clinton County, Ohio. Parents of eight [8] children.
In the “Helmick Family Record” in possession of Mrs. Frank Hamilton
of Buckanan, Michigan it is stated “Jacob Helmick, Jr., moved with his family
from Virginia to Warren County, Ohio in 1805. He and his wife died in Clinton County,
Ohio in 1815.
NOTE: Some descendants of the above Jacob Helmick Jr. claim
his parents were Peter and Mary M. (Storms) Helmick, and a cousin of Adam Helmick,
who married Hannah Teter, sister of the above Sarah (Teter) Helmick.
However, the will and census records appear to indicate they were
brothers and sons of Jacob Helmick, Sr., born in 1748 in the colony of Virginia;
died in June 1815 (will dated June 13, 1815 and recorded in Randolph county, Virginia). Jacob
Helmick SR., above was probably the son of Jacob A. Helmick born 1712 of Richmond
County, Virginia who in turn was the son of John Helmick born 1682 in Jamestown,
Virginia.
The Helmick History continues: “the Name Helmick” has
been traced in a history of the Pennsylvania Dutch to near the city of Strasbourg in Alsace, Germany.
It is supposed they came over with the large emigration about 1700 to 1730 and
landed at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Authentic history of our immediate ancestors
begins with four brothers who lived on Redstone Creek near where Uniontown, Pennsylvania
now stands. They all fought in the Revolutionary War.
Jacob (1748-1815) and Barbara __________ (______-1813) Helmick
Sr., were parents of eleven (11) children. Adam Helmick the eldest child married
Hannah Teter and the second child Jacob Helmick married Sarah Teter. Hannah
and Sarah were both daughters of Phillip and Susannah (Henkel) Teter.
Reverend Paul Henkel in his diary has the following reference to
the above family: “Friday, August 20, 1813 “ visited our old mother who now seems to be near
her end. In the afternoon I and my sister Christina visited Barbara the sick wife of
Jacob Helmick, baptized her twins and administered Holy Communion to her. ‘O pitiful conditions,
but the hope is that she will depart saved’. This locality was then Hardy
county.
We will later check out the records on the above mentioned Peter
and Mary M.(Storms) Helmick as we believe they may be the same as the PETER
AND MARY(DAVIS) HELMICK. Because the localities and places resided.
Possibly there has been some mistake on the census records or possibility Mary was Married twice.
If possible we would like to find the remaining children of Peter and Mary Helmick’s.
Since William Perry Helmick has traveled to and from Illinois quite often he had or Mary
had some relatives in Illinois or possibility in Ohio.
