George Amos Helmick 1837-1925

GEORGE AMOS HELMICK, born July 7, 1837
 in Highland County Virginia according to the marriage records.  And his Obituary showed 
he was born in Bath County, Virginia. He died April 27, 1925.  He was a school teacher  
and taught in the French Creek area schools.  He served  in the Confederate Army during
 the Civil War.  He married MARY ELIZABETH BRAKE on March 29, 1883 at the Cyrus Brake 
residence by W. H. Young. Mary was born ____ __, 1854 in Upshur County.  She is the
daughter of Cyrus B. and Sarah B. Brake.  They had one daughter who died in infancy.

Welch. _________________________ OBITUARY George Amos Helmick, son of Peter and Mary Davis Helmick, was born in Bath County, Va., on July 7, 1837, and died Sat- urday, April 27, 1925. He moved to West Virginia more than 60 years ago and soon after was converted and joined the M.P. Church, and lived a consistent Christian life. He received his education in the public schools and the Academy at French Creek. He was a teacher of this community for more than twenty years. He served in the Confed- erate Army during the Civil War. He was in several important bat- tles, including the battle at Gettys- burg. He was finally captured and taken to Camp Chase. On March 29, 1883, he was united in marriage to Mary Elizabeth Brake, who survives him. To this union was born one daughter, who died in in- fancy. Uncle Amos lived a quiet, un- obtrusive life and was fond of his books and newspapers. He was the fifth child in a family of eight children, all of whom have preceded him to the great beyond except one brother, Silas. He had been in failing health for about a year, and the end came very suddenly. ________________________________
