DEEP DWARVES
AD&D: Complete Book of Dwarves used as reference

Deep dwarves live far beneath the surface of the earth. They originally were a series of advanced miners sent by the dwarven people before the main segregation, who then struck it rich and stayed deep. Some stories defend this decision by saying they were cut off by earthquakes, and forced to build themselves a community.

Deep dwarves average 4 feet to 4'2 feet tall and weigh about 120 pounds. They are large boned, but leaner than other dwarves. Their skin varies from pale brown to light tan, and often carries a reddish tinge. Their eyes are large, but without the sheen of their surface cousins; in color, a washed-out blue. Hair color ranges from flame red to straw blond. The females wear their beards long, unlike other dwarf women (who are typically clean-shaven).

Deep dwarves have little or no contact with the surface as it is too far for them to travel to the world above. Relations with other dwarves are generally peaceful, although there are on-off wars with the duergar. They see hill dwarves as being too friendly with non-dwarven races, and prefer mountain dwarves. They are the most isolated of the dwarven races, by both choice and circumstances, although they trade extensively with what gnomes are nearby.
