AT HEART PYGMY GOAT CLUB
SUMMER
MEETING 2001
JUNE
3, 2001
The Summer 2001 meeting was held at 11:00 a.m. in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the home of Red and Polly Mertens. There were 30 members and 8 4-H guests in attendance.
Club president, Vickie Sowders, opened the meeting by welcoming everyone. Secretary, Sandy Naumann, read the Winter 2001 meeting minutes, which were approved as read.
Club treasurer, Red Mertens, gave the treasurer's report, which was accepted as presented.
Under Old Business, Sandy reported on Zachary Baker, the Junior FFA member from Splendora that the club sponsored. Zachary wrote a letter of thanks and sent pictures of his Boar goat, Rambo. Eva Muenzler discussed the club’s wether contest and urged members to send her placings from wethers they show during 2001 after the last Fall show.
There were several items discussed under New Business:
1) Polly reported on the club’s sponsorship of Molly Farrar, a Shrevport area 4-H girl’s goat project. The club voted to sponsor two more children’s goat projects in 2002.
2) The club discussed setting a common price that members would charge 4-H/FFA members for a wether. It was agreed that the price would be $50.
3) Red and Polly reported on the upcoming LA State Fair show on October 27-28. The Fair will be handling all expenses for judges and premiums this year.
4) The members voted to have the winter 2002 meeting in New Caney on January 26th so that we could have a report on the NPGA Directors Meeting to be held the weekend before.
5) Members were encouraged to list “favorite” and “not so favorite” judges to be considered for the 2002 New Caney show. A motion was made and passed to pay Janet and Bobby $100 to take care of the ring and gate duties for the weekend.
6) Red asked for any suggestions and/or comments to pass along at the NPGA National convention in July. The club declined a suggestion to furnish a meal for the directors at the January meeting. Red discussed the new wether awards being considered by NPGA – bronze, silver, and gold medallions.
After a delicious lunch, the Merten’s veterinarian gave an informative speech on goat nutrition. Sandy Naumann demonstrated grooming and hoof trimming to the 4-H guests, and Heidi Spell gave an excellent workshop on showmanship.
A drawing was held among the 4-H members for a wether generously donated by Bonnie Cornelius.
