KIDS
AT HEART PYGMY GOAT CLUB
SUMMER
MEETING 2000
JUNE
3, 2000
The Summer 2000 meeting was held at 11:00 a.m. in Shreveport, Louisiana, at the home of Red and Polly Mertens. There were 15 members and one guest in attendance.
Club president, Joanne Timm, opened the meeting by welcoming everyone. She reported that the club had 41 memberships, with 1 from Florida, 3 from Oklahoma, 10 from Louisiana, and 27 from Texas.
Club treasurer, Red Mertens, gave the treasurer's report, which was accepted as presented.
Club secretary, Sandy Naumann, then read the minutes from the winter 2000 meeting which was held in New Caney, Texas, in January 2000. Members accepted the minutes as read.
Under Old Business, Red confirmed that the club had purchased a 12-month liability insurance policy in March,2000. Sandy announced that the club had presented founding president, Sandy Lutz, with an award of appreciation at the Henderson show in April.
There were several items discussed under New Business:
1) Sandy reported that she and Bill and Red and Polly had investigated PA systems for the club, and they found a system at Radio Shack with a combination amplifier/speaker plus two cordless clip-on microphones for around $300. Members unanimously voted to purchase this system sometime before the LA State Fair show so that we can check it out then even if we do not need it until the spring show.
2) Red described and showed us the AVID microchip reader and injectors. After some discussion, the members voted for the club to purchase a reader and microchips. Red will contact the vendor to determine if there is a price break on the microchips if we order in larger volumes. Members will be able to purchase the chips at the club’s cost, and non-members will be allowed to buy them at a slightly higher cost, with the profit going to the club.
3) Red and Polly updated the group on the upcoming Louisiana State Fair Show II on the first weekend in November. Our judges will be Delbert Coleman and Linda Colville. The Fair will pay the judges’ expenses and the premiums on Saturday plus ribbons for both days through 7th place, and the club will pay for Sunday’s judge and premiums. At Red’s urging, the Fair officials agreed to charge only $5.00 per pen instead of the usual $10. This will allow the club to pay the same generous premiums on Sunday as the Fair does on Saturday. A volunteer sheet was passed around for the members to sign up for helping at the show.
4) Debbie Moreland showed members the club scrapbook she has assembled. She urged any club members with pictures and/or newspaper articles of past shows or events to please send them to her to include in the scrapbook.
5) The club appointed Darrell Moreland to the position of official club photographer.
6) Joanne read an email from Stacy Hamilton asking if our club would support a possible bid for the NPGA Nationals to be held in Shreveport next summer if Region 3 did not present any bids. Polly stated that she had asked the Fair officials about the possibility of obtaining the facilities during June, and they indicated there should be no problem. After some discussion, members voted to give our support as a club to a bid for Shreveport. Sandy agreed to be the contact person between the club and Stacy, who was appointed to the vacant director’s position for our region.
7) Bonnie asked the group to consider having meetings on Sunday so that Bill could attend also since they must keep the store open on Saturdays. We agreed to try the next meeting on a Sunday.
The business meeting was adjourned.
A representative from the Purina Mills in Shreveport, Al, next gave a very informative talk on nutrition and the importance of keeping the correct balance of ingredients in feed.
We all then enjoyed a delicious barbeque lunch. Scott Mertens, who prepared the wonderful brisket and chicken, was presented with a cookbook and turning fork in appreciation of his culinary skills.
After lunch, Red showed us how to inject a microchip on one of his does. Eva also demonstrated pregnancy tests on two does.
