| In 1834, Lord S-, an avid amateur archeologist, was on holiday in northern Europe. While hiking in the mountains, he came across a cave that had recently been uncovered by a landslide. Exploration of the cave revealed a series of five pits dug into the floor. He excavated each pit, noted its contents, and cleared the site. Following his death in 1874, his finds were donated to Mt St Vincent College in New York City. There they languished, unopened, until 2002, when the crates were uncovered during renovations. A quick examination of the contents revealed the notes, the jewelry, and some fragmentary texts. The texts are liguistically related to the "Red Book", translated by Dr Tolkien in the 20th C. Currently the texts are undergoing essential conservation work, and will be published as soon as they are available. Fragmentary evidence has identified the origins of the finds as "Angmar", a northen kingdom. The "Red Book" gives the dates for Angmar as @ 1250-1975 TA. Very little is known about this kingdom. It is hoped that the artifacts and the texts uncovered by Lord S- will shed some light on this murky corner of the history of Middle-Earth. |
