KURANT
Kurant was founded about 500 years ago, when human settlers from the Griffon Isles traveled to find a better home since the volcanic islands they inhabitated became active after centuries of quiet.
So the humans moved in and pushed the indigenous race. The wild elves out off of the land and raised farms wherever the land would allow. They soon became a monarchy with the first king being Sir YementPalor, who became famed for his push for taming the land. Many of the natural predators in the land had bounties put on them and the indigenous people we pushed further and further away. Some of them conforming to the human population, that grew by the day. At the same time the Halflings that lived in the far eastern part of the country were coming out of there shires to welcome the humans, and were eventually overrun.
One Halfling by the name of Srilak Lightfoot wasn?t as blinded as his family in the over-kindness of the humans, they lost farmland without any compensation and soon the shires were in danger of being totally lost. So Srilak shrewdly convinced the dwarven king that his mines were going to be overrun as well.
This lead to the Srilakian War, so named by historians because of the Halflings, part in starting it. The dwarves, were eventually beaten back by the human and their elven allies. Those rats just multiply so fast.
Once the treachery of the Halfling was discovered the human cleric of Nedra, OmulousTashal, negotiated and made peace with the Dwarves of the GreyPeaks. This cleric also convinced King Thaergis XII to help hunt down the Halfling that caused strife between the races. The Halfling was found and tried for treason and hanged.
About 50 years ago Kurant?s king was named Turgis the Just. He was a good king by most accounts, however, he was too kind. His power wained and as it did goblin raiders moved into Kurant, taking whatever they wished. They held the country in a tightening grip and the guilds saw how week the king was. An unnamed guild master commissioned a contract on the life of the inept king. It was carried out and the council of guilds took over control of the country. Of course, they hired some outsiders to do an investigation, and of course, no culprit was found. When an heir appeared he was met with a mysterious death. The guild?s had essentially seized control of the government and declared Kurant a republic. The guilds held democratic elections, that the wealthy got to vote in, while other positions were appointed. The churches were given governmental powers so they never objected. And the guilds were able to drive off the goblin raiders and their hordes of trained wolf packs.
There was peace in the realm for the next 13 years.  The goblins and their packs of trained wolves were hunted almost to extinction.  And there was a general feel of settling.  The dwarves made peace with the Republic of Kurant and trade routes were established with far away lands.  Magic was prevelant and some of the guilds started to suspect the Mages Circle of having more than their fair share of the power.  So they hired a mage to keep Barfgose safe and to spy on the Mage's Circle.  The mage was named Finkle the great and he had a wondrous tower in Reylon. However, like many mages his power went to his head and he stepped out of line.  He was subsequently sent out of the realm never to return.  Once the Mage's Circle got wind of this news they started to try to undermine the Republic of Kurant, because of the restrictions being placed on them.  Eventually the Mage's lost their seat in the Senate and no longer had representation in the government.  This of course, only made them less lawful and they started taking out contracts on certain anti- magic guilds.  This lead to the Republican government to make the Mage's Circle and any other communing of Wizards' and Sorcerer's illegal.  The controversy grew and the people of Kurant felt that they were not safe in the current state so demanded that the Mages be given their seat again.  Consequently there were hearings.
