BRIEF BACKGROUND OF ICE HOCKEY IN MALAYSIA

The sport of ice hockey had an enthusiastic following in the 1970s
but due to inadequate skating rink facilities, the sport did not have the opportunity
to grow until the opening of Sunway Pyramid Ice Rink. The ice rink is equipped with
excellent facilities and its Ice Hockey School has to-date generated much publicity
for the rink as well as public interest in the sport of ice hockey.

In the past two years, ice hockey has been played at Sunway Pyramid on a regular basis,
with the Sunway Pyramid team having played several matches against visiting teams,
and recently some away matches in Singapore.
One team member also participated as a guest player in the recent
International Hong Kong 5's held in May 2000.

In August 2000, two teams consisted the local and expatriate working in Malaysia
came together played in Mines Ice Rink at Mines Resort City in Kuala Lumpur.
The expatriate team came out top and took the championship cup,
followed by our club’s local team came in third placing. In total there was 2 teams from Singapore,
1 team from Mines, 2 local club teams, and 1 Penang team.

In October 2000, in Sunway Pyramid Ice Rink the club organized a small scale
International tournament called 1st. Malaysian Ice Hockey Tournament.
In total 4 international men division team consisted of Dubai Mighty Camel, Hong Kong Budweiser,
Singapore San Miguel and Our local and mixed expatriate team called themselves KL Mat-Salleh.
The local division team consisted our local team Inferno Ice Hockey club, Kelab Hoki Ais Saga,
The Penang Underdogs, and Mines Wonder Snow’s Speed Shadows.

The result was outstanding; The KL Mat-Salleh came out top placing and won the
Men International Division.
Our local Inferno Ice Hockey Team secured the title of Asian Men Division.

The tournament was a great success for our club,
since both the Men International Cup and Asian Men Cup won by our KHAS club members.

In November 2000 KHAS send a mixed expatriate and local team to play in the yearly
Bangkok Charity Tournament in an Olympic size ice rink with 6 a side game play.

Our team did not qualify for the A division cup, so our team had to play the
B division cup where we came back with 2nd. placing in the B division.

This was a great experience for all the players especially those who had
never played on the Olympic size ice ring with 6 players on each side.
