Quincy's Official Tourist Information Center

The Villa Katherine is the only example of Mediterranean architecture in the Midwest.  Located on a bluff with a breath-taking view of the famous Mississippi River, the Islamic residence built in 1900, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the prestigious Illinois Register of Historic Places.  Its total restoration is being sponsored by the Friends of the Castle.

Built for Quincy native and world traveler George Metz, and based on his sketches and photos of villas in various ports of the Islamic word, the Villa Katherine is built and trimmed with local materials.  It has a number of interesting features, including a "harem room" and a courtyard which surrounds a reflecting pool.

The Villa has been designated as Quincy's Tourist Information Center by both the Illinois Great River Road System and the Quincy Convention & Visitors Bureau.  While restoration is in progress, the Information Center, which is staffed by Green Thumb employees and volunteers, remains open to the public.  Group tours of the building can be arranged and the grounds can be reserved for use by groups.

Friends of the Castle cordially invite you to visit.
